So I'm trying to build a budget gayming rig and I'm wondering if a cheaper model processor like this Phenom II X4 925 can be overclocked to reach the same performance as a more expensive model such as the Phenom II X4 970. It seems entirely possible since the only difference I see between those two processors is the clock speed (and wattage). Is the wattage difference simply due to the higher clock or is there actually some physical difference between the processors?
There's another difference between those processors - unlocked multipliers, which makes a big difference in terms of overclocking ease and capability.
Also if you're going for a Phenom II x4 BE, then go for the 955, it can easily be overclocked to match, and surpass the performance of the 970.
What's your budget anyway? Just curious on what parts you picked out.
This is what I have in mind currently. I have around $600 to spend on this.
I don't plan on doing any really heavy gaming. Mostly Source games, Second Life, and Brink when it's released.
Ok, got it
right now, it's $567 without rebates, $547 with rebates.

I realize you were asking about BE processors, but I was making a build with a 955 in it, but I felt a bit hesitant to post it, since there were no discount/combo for it, so I'll leave it up to you.
If you want to go for a 955, keep in mind, your build price will increase by ~$45
Also motherboard and PSU should provide for easy crossfire options later on
Oh wow, thanks. I appreciate the help. The only thing I'd change is to make that GPU Nvidia. I would prefer ATI but Second Life has issues with ATI drivers not allocating video memory properly so the game runs poorly on those cards.
Whatever you do, don't get the 460 SE edition though; it's actually slower than a 5770
Yeah I was unsure about that. Maybe I'll spend the extra money on a GTX 470.
If you need an nVidia card, maybe you should wait until the launch of GTX 560s, which supposedly is January 20th, and see how it affects prices, or maybe even get one yourself.
Aftermarket cooler.
AM2+ processor is compatible with AM3 motherboard?

I don't think so.
