Byelection for Barnaby Joyce Sott Ludlam - INELIGIBLE Larissa Waters - INELIGIBLE Malcolm Roberts - INELIGIBLE Fiona Nash - INELIGIBLE Matt Canavan is ELIGIBLE Nick Xenophon is ELIGIBLE The Nationals have lost their leader and their deputy leader. The government is headed to a byelection. This is after the prime minister said in parliament in August that he was confident that Joyce was eligible to sit in parliament “and the high court will so hold”
Live feed here. If the coalition lose the byelection, they lose their majority.
Holy shit Apparently that seat is pretty conservative so nothing will probably happen
I liked Barnaby Joyce for the banter Why couldn't Abbott have been in his place instead :-(

[editline]27th October 2017[/editline] Anyways I just love the irony that a One Nation Senator was ruled ineligible for his foreign citizenship. What a shitshow

What a shitshow
but New England was held by Windsor for a fairly long time before his retirement. So this is not a "safe seat" it's a "likely to be safe" but seeing as Turnbull is doing horribly in the polls and Labor's been getting polling boost (esp with this recent AWU scandal), Windsor could win outright
Hey fruxo mate, Malcolm Roberts is running for state seat of Ipswich. Isn't that your crib? [editline]27th October 2017[/editline]
He won't lose the byelection. What a shitshow
"Cabinet members almost always come from the safest possible seats" As a general rule, yes, but this is not necessarily the case in New England. Is Barnaby just running again for byelection or do they have to field a different member? I've forgotten
I hope Joyce doesn't win, though that's likely to happen anyway. I'm not getting my hopes up.
This is everything I could have ever hoped for. What started as an easy Greens bashing venture turned into a complete shitshow with everyone getting egg on their face. Politicans sometimes...
I only know the basics of aus politics. (who the pm is, who the parties are, etc) what does this actually mean? why are 5 elected members not "eligible"?
I only know the basics of aus politics. (who the pm is, who the parties are, etc) what does this actually mean? why are 5 elected members not "eligible"?
They violated one of the rules in the constitution that says you cannot be a member of parliament if you are a dual citizen. Because they were dual-citizens, they are ineligible to be in parliament and their election has been voided.* *were dual citizens as in at the time of their election they were. Essentially they didn't renounce their other citizenship in time (either because they didn't know they were one, or they just didnt get around to it in time
Windsor has just pulled out, so any chance of Joyce losing is out the window. Labor has no chance of gaining any ground.
Windsor has just pulled out, so any chance of Joyce losing is out the window. But it depends who runs. If another independent puts his hat in, maybe a fresh face, you never know. Nothing is ever guaranteed. But overall this is just such a horrible week for the government, first Micaelia Cash's office bungling the AWU raids and then this. Will be interesting to see the polls.

But from last I checked he isn't a resident of Ipswich and people down here think one nation is a fucking joke Best of luck running in a Labor seat
oh my god, this has got to go down in history as one of the biggest legal fuckups of any political party in the world.
oh my god, this has got to go down in history as one of the biggest legal fuckups of any democratic party in the world.
Of any democratic party? The members found ineligible were from three different parties, and one of the members who was found legible was from a fourth party.
Of any democratic party? The members found ineligible were from three different parties, and one of the members who was found legible was from a fourth party.
I meant to say political party.
I meant to say political party.
Don't you mean parties?
Don't you mean parties?
no? I meant this will be remembered in the history of democracies as one of the biggest fuckups of a major political party to loose their leadership over something as trivial as forgetting to fill out one form.
no? I meant this will be remembered in the history of democracies as one of the biggest fuckups of a major political party to loose their leadership over something as trivial as forgetting to fill out one form.
There's more than one party involved though..
Yeah that is in fact my curb. But from last I checked he isn't a resident of Ipswich and people down here think one nation is a fucking joke Best of luck running in a Labor seat
Interesting. I wonder if they're running him in a safe seat to make quick work of him because he was too mad even for One Nation [editline]27th October 2017[/editline]
There's more than one party involved though..
to be fair, the libs/nats are the only major party involved, the others are minor, and I wouldn't really class the Greens as having fucked up because they resigned the day of and were genuinely honest about the entire process and noone should fault them for that. The fuckup here really lies in how obstinate the coalition + one nation were in their innocence despite every legal expert telling them they were fucked, and then proceeding to call into question the validity of lower house proceedings by allowing barnaby to continue to vote and then getting fucked by the high court anyway. major egg on face I wouldn't class this as the biggest major party fuck up in major party history though, fair sure we've had worse
More like the Foreign Nationals heh
get fucked barnbaby joyce [editline]27th October 2017[/editline]
Anyways I just love the irony that a One Nation Senator was ruled ineligible for his foreign citizenship. What a shitshow
Didn't they also say that it wasn't fair to discriminate over citizenship or some shit like that aswell?
Interesting. I wonder if they're running him in a safe seat to make quick work of him because he was too mad even for One Nation
That's one goodish theory to assume but one nation was advertising for a while for a candidate for the Ipswich area. I'm assuming nobody really came to the forefront because 1. People here hate Pauline 2. Those that admire her go even far right than she is and 3. Probably had a criminal conviction rap sheet that was longer than my dick (dab) He was probably planned to run for Ipswich since they knew he was pretty fucked. He won't win it, Ipswich has always preferred Labor both federally and on the state level except for the 2011 election when Ian Berry won Roberts is a fucking stupid candidate but I might see if I can interview him lmao
