I think groups are counted as plural when using terms such as "were" and "was". Not entirely sure though, honestly it sounds normal to me.

There's different approaches to referring to companies. Some publications treat them as singular, others as plural. We treat them as plural because it conveys a company is made up of people.

a group of people is a singular thing, so it is 'valve was'
there is no alternate way of doing this, this is the only right way
i thought it was rather strange that TF2 and some of their other games got occulus rift support as quick as it did

The US and the UK have different English conventions, fyi. In my understanding it's pretty common to refer to groups as plural in the UK, while the US is more prone to singular.
