• Failure to your harddrive is imminent

Hey guize, I need some help with my dad's computer. Well we got home, dad turned on his computer, and the "Failure to your harddrive is imminent" message came up. How do I deal with this FP? I googled it up and it says to not turn on your computer, but to back it up. Oh and its an old Gateway laptop from 3 years ago.
Back up all important data and buy a new hard drive before it fails completely, taking your data with it.
Back it up, get a new drive.
That's the thing, do I have to turn it on to back it up?
Of course. How else are you going to get the data off it.

UPDATE: So its been a week ever since this happened. My dad's computer is running fine so far. He's been playing his BF2 and no problems at all. Though we did back up everything to an external hard drive.
It's strange, I once got this message on an old HDD about a year ago, I backed everything up and got ready to buy a new one, but it's still working to this day.
one of the big reasons to get the Imminent Harddrive failure warning is one of the critical SMART attributes getting too high. In most cases, it's the Reallocated Sector count. Yes, your harddrive is fine. But the more of these sectors get reallocated and there is no more reserves, you start to run into a bunch of errors and corruption. Typically, there is either a problem with the magnets on the platters, or a problem with the user. Remember kids, always turn off your computer properly. Don't hard shutdown (Hold the button, remove power) when it's not needed. This causes more problems with the HDD.

[editline]04:19AM[/editline] I do it all the time with my laptop. I'll have to check smart some time if I'm bored.
