In fact, John Winkler, 30, had gone to a neighbor's apartment Monday night on Palm Avenue in West Hollywood where a man was holding people hostage and tried to help.
Winkler was shot when he rushed out of the apartment with another victim who had been trapped inside the apartment with a third victim and the suspect, sheriff's officials said in a statement.
“The apartment door suddenly opened and a male victim came rushing out,” the statement said. “He was covered in blood and bleeding profusely from the neck. Simultaneously, victim Winkler ran out of the door, lunging at the back of the fleeing victim. Both ran directly at the deputies.”
Three deputies fired at Winkler. He was shot once and died.
[Updated at 4:56 p.m.: Interim Sheriff John Scott on Thursday called the shooting “very tragic.”

this is what you don't do if you're in a situation where you're surrounded by police.
To be honest I'm surprised the actual victim wasn't shot as well.
This sucks, but isn't surprising and It difficult to blame them.

Knowing LA police, this is probably a complete load of bullshit.

Another article claims the victim was also struck

LAPD is fucking retarded. Seriously after the Dorner incident shooting up random ass cars they would have straightened up.

dude comes at you covered in blood during a hostage situation when suspect is unknown
i'm sorry, but what do you expect

-whatisapolice-
I wonder why Winkler lunged at the back of the other victim, it's definitely what got the police to shoot at him.
this is what you don't do if you're in a situation where you're surrounded by police.
If you're running from someone who's trying to kill you while you're bleeding profusely, I'm not entirely sure you'd be thinking correctly.
All around a horrible situation. I won't blame the police, but it's certainly not the victim's faults either.
I mean, don't they have non-lethal weapons and stuff? They mention the fact that the assailant was using a knife to commit these crimes, so it's a possibility he didn't have access to a firearm, couldn't they of just disabled the guy they thought would've been the attacker instead of y-know, shooting the shit out of him?
knife is considered a lethal weapon, so they have to respond in kind
knife is considered a lethal weapon, so they have to respond in kind
Right. I don't know much about the police force, so i'm kind of stupid about all that shit, my bad.
I wonder why Winkler lunged at the back of the other victim, it's definitely what got the police to shoot at him.
Maybe he was on some drugs, or painstakingly drunk?

??? winkler wasn't bleeding and he "lunged" at the guy who was bleeding.

Literally everything about your post is wrong. For starters this was LASD not LAPD, West Hollywood doesn't even fall under LAPD jurisdiction. Have you even been to California in your entire life? Also the fact that he matched the suspects description and was covered in blood and lunged at the other man does not help his case.
its amazing how much blood comes out from the smallest injuries, a guy got the shit kicked out of him outside my dorm and he was drenched in blood from his broken nose, this is just a sad case of wrong time and wrong place.
this is what you don't do if you're in a situation where you're surrounded by police.
What I'm seeing is that there was an assailant behind them that would 100% try and kill them, while in front of them there were police which(even though they were LA police) has less chance than that.

They were just trying to get the fuck out of there. This is such a shitty situation, but it's really not anyone's fault. Everyone did what they thought was the right thing to do and unfortunately this is how it turned out. It's a damn shame in fact.
??? winkler wasn't bleeding and he "lunged" at the guy who was bleeding.
They were both shot by the police, smartass.
More like "lunged" out of the room from where there's a guy who's trying to kill them was in.
[editline]11th April 2014[/editline]
Not sure about you, but if I had to choose who to "lung" at out of the police and a crazy motherfucker with a knife, I'd choose the police.

you don't "lunge" out period. we're trained to shoot if there seems to be a deadly threat, and considering lasd only had the information that there were 2 men in the room, and the suspect was a thin white man with a black t, anybody is a possible threat, especially when one of them is bleeding from the neck and there's a guy chasing him.

What do YOU expect, the dude to take a shower before coming out?
How being covered in blood relevant in any way? It's not like it could be a lethal weapon.
Also they shot the dude behind him not the one covered in blood. So yeah, what are we even discussing here...

-okay they knew-
They didn't know he had a knife before coming inside the appartment. They opened fire before even seeing any kind of weapon. Talk about "respond in kind".

Sheriff’s deputies said they got a call about an assailant with a knife inside one of the units. When they got to the complex, a witness told them there were two men in the apartment and that the assailant was a thin white man wearing a black shirt, according to the statement.
What are tazers?
dude comes at you covered in blood during a hostage situation when suspect is unknown

I don't know, try to subdue them and find out who they are, because it's possible they're a victim who's been injured and trying to run away from the attacker.
This was a tragic accident, but people shouldn't be trying to defend the police by saying that they're the dangerous ones you should stay away from in a situation like this.
Edit: Reminds me of the guy who had his car break down, and when he went to get help he was killed by police because they thought he had hurt somebody, the police are the main people you should be able to go to without fear of being shot.
What are tazers?
A tazer isn't the best tactic in the world for every situation, dude.
A tazer isn't the best tactic in the world for every situation, dude.
These days you have shotgun ammo that are tiny tazers. You can shoot them at a target from a pretty long range and still be accurate. How would a non-lethal action be worse tactic?
I'm sure if weapons weren't so prevalent non lethal techniques/devices would be being used more often. Even then it's not excuse to not use them.

As far as I'm aware, shotguns are considered too heavy with too much potential collateral for usage most of the time. Especially considering this guy had a knife of all things, a long weapon like that is basically asking for someone to get inside and stab you.

I'm not talking about regular shotgun ammo I'm talking about these things.

Is real life Counter Strike? Are they just going to press 'b' and spawn a tazer shotgun?
