• How does computer hacking in Fallout 3/New Vegas work?

I have always been a fan of infiltration via lockpick rather than computer hacking because I never understood computer hacking, and would almost always fail an attempt until I learned about the "Geuss 3 times, back out" thing. I have an idea how it works but it seems not true. I will just show you the scenerios and you tell me which case it is. Scenerio 1: Any letters in the password are correct Password = communicate Geuss: commission, 6/11 correct? Scenerio 2: Any letters in the password are correct, but only once Password = communicate Geuss: commission, 5/11 correct? Because there is only one "i" in the password, and there are two in the geuss, so it only counts one. Scenerio 3: Location, location, location, the position of the letters counts Password = communicate Geuss: commission, 4/11 correct? Because there are "i"'s in the geuss and in the password, but they do not match up in position password:geuss. Scenerio 4: There is not pattern, no logic, no mastery, Bethesda Softworks hates you. Password = communicate Geuss: communist, 1/11 correct? Because BETHESDA HATES YOU. Which is it?
Your pselling is really bad.
it's better than oblivion lockpicking, trust me.
Do it like this, enter computer, 3 random tries, exit, repeat.
Do it like this, enter computer, 3 random tries, exit, repeat.
Yea, that always solves it for me if i don't get it right.
Do it like this: Press ~, click the computer, type unlock. Fuck the hacking minigame it sucks.
Do it like this: Press ~, click the computer, type unlock. Fuck the hacking minigame it sucks.
You can't do that if you play it on a console. :colbert:
I didn't really bother with it at first. I just picked until I got it right, but if you get it how it works, it's really simple.
The character is correct if it is the same place as in the password. Also, just look for any bracket type things. If you get one that highlights a few characters, it will either replenish your guesses or delete an incorrect password. For instance, in /@:}#}@:[;:']>: Hovering over the "[" would highlight the characters after it until the "]". Clicking on it, as I said before, would replenish your guesses or delete an incorrect answer.
Bethesda hates you.
I'd rather have something similar to hacking in Timesplitters, where you move wires around in the correct fashion, before the time runs out.
Location.
The correct spelling is guess. Oblivion lockpicking is really easy once you know what you're doing.
You mean it's really easy when you get the skeleton key.
Scenerio 4. My hacking stratagy is as follows: 1. Quicksave infront of Computer. 2. Access Computer. 3. Click 4 words at Random. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until Successful.
Scenario 3, it's incredibly easy for me, I love it what I don't like is how sometimes you'll be a pixel away from the lock, your pick will snap, then you'll put the new one in the exact same place and it'll unlock :colbert:

Not to mention I have like a 40/1 Find/Break ratio on those pins.
Just pick the word that makes the most sense in the context. Ex: If you're dealing with the Brotherhood of Steel, pick something like "technology".
Once you play it enough you should be able the get the password first time(for me anyway) Usually its the second or third one down on the left.
Just pick the word that makes the most sense in the context. Ex: If you're dealing with the Brotherhood of Steel, pick something like "technology".
I get the feeling you haven't played fallout 3
When you first hack a PC there is a tutorial poping out for a reason.
Holy shit 666 posts!
I get the feeling you haven't played fallout 3
What makes you say that?
What makes you say that?
the passwords are always completely random always completely
Can I see some proof?
Can I see some proof?
burden of proof is on you, you suggested the password is even remotely relevant to the owner five relevant terminal passwords shouldn't be hard to come up with, but I'm going to need two different passwords from each of the five to confirm that they are both relevant to the terminal owner or better yet, just look at the wiki http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Hacking look at that, I did all the work for you, it says twice the passwords are random and the only reason they aren't always random is because you can find terminal passwords you couldn't ordinarily get from hacking (see the picture) hacking a terminal will ALWAYS result in a random password
Alright, calm down.
Alright, calm down.
I'm in argument mode, sorry going all-out
