Senate Bill S 510 Food Safety Modernization Act vote imminent: Would outlaw gardening.....

(NaturalNews) Senate Bill 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, has been called "the most dangerous bill in the history of the United States of America." It would grant the U.S. government new authority over the public's right to grow, trade and transport any foods. This would give Big brother the power to regulate the tomato plants in your backyard. It would grant them the power to arrest and imprison people selling cucumbers at farmer's markets. It would criminalize the transporting of organic produce if you don't comply with the authoritarian rules of the federal government.
"It will become the most offensive authority against the cultivation, trade and consumption of food and agricultural products of one's choice. It will be unconstitutional and contrary to natural law or, if you like, the will of God." - Dr. Shiv Chopra, Canada Health whistleblower (http://shivchopra.com/?page_id=2)
This tyrannical law puts all food production (yes, even food produced in your own garden) under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security. Yep -- the very same people running the TSA and its naked body scanner / passenger groping programs.
This law would also give the U.S. government the power to arrest any backyard food producer as a felon (a "smuggler") for merely growing lettuce and selling it at a local farmer's market.
It also sells out U.S. sovereignty over our own food supply by ceding to the authority of both the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Codex Alimentarius.
It would criminalize seed saving (http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/20...), turning backyard gardeners who save heirloom seeds into common criminals. This is obviously designed to give corporations like Monsanto a monopoly over seeds.
It would create an unreasonable paperwork burden that would put small food producers out of business, resulting in more power over the food supply shifting to large multinational corporations.

My own country is starting to really piss me off. I'm not one for moving to Europe, but I very well just may have to in a few years.
Here is the full bill: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:S.510:
As much as this is terrible, that source is pretty biased.
Can you point out the relevant sections of the legislation? I don't trust a place called NaturalNews for anything related to agriculture at all.

Uh.
Too late, it already passed.

The HHS will require registration and payment of a fee by any "person (excluding farms and restaurants) who manufactures, processes, packs, distributes, receives, holds, or imports an article of food." Individuals who partake in food handling without official registration are subject to a maximum 10 year prison sentence. Registration requires each facility which produces or handles food to maintain records relating to food safety.
That doesn't exactly sound awful. The fee is nominal for a business ($500 p. anum) and they should be record keeping anyway.
According to the text of the law all food sold at local farmers' markets, for example, would be subject to the certification requirements.
If a certification even costs a dime this is a bullshit act.
[editline]21st November 2010[/editline]
Oh, $500, yea, this bill is fucking horrible.
There's a lot of em'. Plus it's hard to figure out what a bill means unless you either know the "legal language" or someone explains it to you.
If the only person speaking out against it is confirmed wackjob Deepak Chopra, you know it's not really a threat.
You might want to hurry up, they might pass a bill soon that outlaws emigrating.
What the shit, is everything kept secret until it's passed or something?
Of course. This is the most transparent administration, after all.
It seems Americans are always whining afterwards and never before. Surely there is a way to keep up with all the bill proposals.
Not really.
Look at the stimulus bill or the health care bill. They stuff all sorts of hidden nuggets in there, but nobody finds out until afterwards because of the massive wall of text you have to read through to get to it. That, and they also like to bum rush bills through.
Sometimes they pass things in the dead of night.

I don't think it was introduced by the president.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't outlaw growing food in your own garden. If someone can provide me with the citation from the source ( the actual bill itself ) that'd be great.

From what I understand, it means that if you try to sell or distribute food that doesn't meet their standards then you'll get fined. So theoretically if you grow some food in your back yard and give them to your neighbors it's completely illegal, but you obviously won't be prosecuted for that.
But obviously the law is meant to protect people against cheap growers who don't make sure their food is safe, not to prosecute Joe and his tiny backyard garden for his salads or whatever.
EDIT: Digging all of the disagrees I'm getting, the source is biased, this bill won't affect home growers at all unless you decide to start distributing or selling it. :sigh:

This is why even Bush did a better job. At least he wasn't screwing over citizens, all he did was send some troops overseas to tear the arabs some new assholes.
Edit: WTF, is someone else logging into my account? Every time I get on facepunch, it's like I get 20 more posts... wtf...
this law is still full of shit and an obvious lobbyist law by the big food corporations.

I don't see a problem with that to be honest. It prevents people from taking away business from the businesses. If you want to start your own food market then obviously you need to be legalized and go through the whole process. If that's what it really is then honestly it sounds all fine to me. As long as it doesn't take away the right to grow food in your own garden for your own eating it's all good.

You're an idiot.
NaturalNews is the single most retarded "news site" that there ever was, just read their main page for a bit.
My only issue is that they're asking for some people to pay $500 just to make a lively hood, then taxing them.
Well fuck that! I love my garden. I will willing be called a "criminal" to keep growing it.
Fuck you, Big Brother.

It's a tax that only hurts the little people.
Nonsense, komrades. People on this forum have told me that all sectors of the economy do better once they have been regulated by the government. So what if it costs you $500 a year to keep a tomato garden in your backyard. You will all be SAFER for it...

Source is uselessly biased, you can grow your own foods, but if you plan to sell it, you must comply with food standards. I don't really see the problem with this bill (soon to be law, goes into effect after thanksgiving), makes some good changes to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic act.

the bill doesn't outlaw gardening. the title is wrong. if you had read anything in this thread other than the title, you would know this
Admittedly, I only glanced over the bill's section titles and did some Ctrl-F'ing, but I couldn't find anywhere where it talks about "criminalizing seed saving", either.
