Republican terrorists were blamed last night for detonating a car bomb outside the courthouse of the Irish border city of Newry. The device, in a vehicle, was abandoned close to the gates of the courthouse in Newry, Co Down around ten o’clock last night. Police were evacuating the area when the bomb went off. A telephone warning was made using a recognised code word before the bomb detonated . People in the city reported hearing a loud explosion and smoke could be seen in the area around the building at New Street, near the city centre. The attack came just days after a mortar bomb was abandoned near a police station in the village of Keady, Co Armagh, about 20 miles away. It led to a three-day security operation which obliged some village residents to vacate their homes. The police described the devices recovered as sophisticated, raising fears that republican groups opposed to the peace process have acquired new technological skills. In November last year a 400lb bomb partially detonated outside the headquarters of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, close to the city centre. In October last year, Newry courthouse was the scene of a security alert after an army bomb disposal team was sent to examine a suspicious vehicle abandoned nearby. In March last year, dissidents gunned down two soldiers at Massereene army barracks, Antrim. Two days later they shot dead police constable Stephen Carroll in Craigavon, Co Armagh as he answered a call for help. In September police discovered a 600lb bomb outside the south Armagh village of Forkhill. The terrorists’ intention was to detonate the device using a command wire, which ran back across the border to a firing point in the Republic, when a police patrol car passed by. Last month a Catholic police officer was seriously injured in car bomb attack in Co Antrim while a number of police stations have been shot at several times in recent weeks. Gary McKeown, the chairman of the nationalist SDLP in Newry, condemned those responsible for last night’s attack. "Lives could have been lost as a result of this bombing," he said. "It serves absolutely no purpose and does nothing for the community or the cause of a united Ireland. "If people want to advance their beliefs, then they should enter the democratic process and debate with their political opponents rather than resorting to violence. Planting bombs outside courthouses will achieve nothing."
Source: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/global/article7037152.ece Real IRA stirring shit up again.
ah, the western republicans
I don't understand The Real IRA. Bombing Northern Ireland isn't going to win them any public support and it certainly won't convince the UK government to do anything but tighten security. [editline]04:02PM[/editline] Thread title is crap BTW; what republican terrorist, near which border? It should be something like "Irish republicans detonate car bomb in Northern Irish city"
The last desperate gasps of air from the republican terrorists. Considering how far Northern Ireland has come, in terms of power sharing and that kind of thing, I'm surprised they're still bothering. Personally as a UK citizen (England specifically), I'm in support of the reunification or Ireland. Obviously thought that choice is up to the people of Northern Ireland. Perhaps within the next 20 years there will be a referendum so they can finally decide.
My Granny lives in Newry.
I live there It was hell getting to school, blockades everywhere :\
Everybody needs to stop bombing each other, why can't we settle things like men with face to face fistycuffs.
These people make NI look bad.
I swear to god if this shit starts up again.
I can't be the only one who pictured John McCain when reading the title.
The real IRA are a joke, seriously. Who calls themselves 'The real' IRA anyway. [editline]04:30PM[/editline]
I don't understand The Real IRA. Technically are I guess, just the British obviously will label them terrorists - because thats what they are. IRA being radically different to those during the early 1900's and these new guys being even more different than the 70's and 80's counter parts.
I can't be the only one who pictured John McCain when reading the title.
I pictured Ron Paul. :downs:
I pictured Ron Paul. :downs:
no he would be blowing up banks and screaming GOLD GOLD PRECIOUS GOLD!
ron paul would have done it from a blimp
I think that was a game someone made
IRA's dead, they lost years ago.
Nobody died from the car bomb? They shouldn't have been so conservative with the explosives.
Northern Ireland, most pathetic country ever. Going home on the bus today and was caught between 12-14 year olds flinging shitty insults at eachother because of what? RELIGION.
DEATH TO THE TERRORISTS! DEATH TO THE TERRORISTS! /caps
These guys are fucking pussies compared to the original IRA. The IRA carried out a mortar attack that, if it had just hit a couple of feet away from where it did, would have killed the entire British cabinet including Prime Minister John Major and destroyed a large portion of 10 Downing Street.
I think your thinking of the Brighton bomb which was against Thatcher and would have killed her had she been in bed.
I can't be the only one who pictured John McCain when reading the title.
I thought it was US Republicans, too. The irony of Republicans being accused of terrorism would have been delicious.
I would be more interested by the notion that there were republicans in mexico [editline]02:12PM[/editline] or canada
I can't be the only one who pictured John McCain when reading the title.
I came in here expecting to read about a group of Texans bombing the Mexican border to keep immigrants out.
I read the title and laughed at insane oxymoron.
They're pathetic.
Oh, those Republicans. Goddamnit.
The IRA were effective in the 1920's when they had public opinion, and a proper reason to fight, but nowadays, they have neither. They're wasting their time, most people hate them and they're trying to "free" a country that doesn't want to be freed. Relations between North and South are better than ever, only thing I have against them is when I'm listening to them speaking Irish in Aural Comprehension exams, can't understand a fucking word.
ron paul would have done it from a blimp
Ron Paul would have let the free market do it
