Guidelines to know when a program is going to prevent your computer from sleeping?

so i'm having a problem with my computer not being able to sleep, and since trying to pinpoint exactly which program(s) are doing it with the command prompt is kind of vague, i'd like to approach this from another angle.
what things could a program do to prevent my computer from sleeping?
As soon as your computer unexpected wakes up from sleep, type "Powercfg -lastwake" in command prompt. It will tell you what's causing it.
well, after researching for things that could cause my computer to not sleep, it turns out that my network adapter can wake up my computer (without a magic packet) for some reason.
just pointing that out in case anyone else is wondering.
