The provincial governor said the man in charge of the crossing was asleep and had been arrested. Egyptian roads and railways have a poor safety record. An estimated 8,000 people die in car accidents each year in the country. The head of the railway authority has also resigned. Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi ordered his ministers to offer support to the families of those killed, the state news agency reported. "They told us the barriers were open when the bus crossed the tracks and the train collided with it," doctor Mohamed Samir told the Reuters news agency, citing witness accounts. An eyewitness said the train pushed the bus about 1km (half a mile) along the track. More than a dozen people were also injured. Distraught families searched for the remains of their loved ones along the tracks, the Associated Press reported.
Trains are pretty loud. Not sure how the bus driver didn't hear it. By the way, I think I know how this happened... One of the children must've said, "I like trains."
Oh my god. Thats horrible.
People are retarded at level crossings. [editline]18th November 2012[/editline] This apparently is no exception. Just because it has a barrier (that was apparently faulty [they're meant to drop when a fault occurs]) doesn't mean you shouldn't check to see if a train is coming.
Jesus christ, there is not even a bus to speak of anymore on the pictures......
AJE is now reporting 'at least 50' dead and 17 injured
50 + 17 = 67 and there were 60 children and 1 adult...who are the other 6 people?
Their parents must be a train wreck Edit: no but seriously, that really is horrible and I hope their families are able to cope with the situation.
Reason: school buses
Their parents must be a train wreck
Ha........ Ha.......... Ha..

Please calm down, it's a tragic accident. But there's no sense in feeling depressed over something out of your control, lighten up. Sorry If I offended anyone.

I don't mean to derail the thread but puns are great, even more flavorsome when people rustle their jimmies over them. :buddy: (User was banned for this post ("meme reply" - postal))
Bet they had a hard time keeping track of the dead children.
What's with the goddamn TRAINS lately? Are they revolting? Do they plan to kill us all?
Or maybe not. This is fucked up.
I dislike trains And i feel bad for theese children, and hteir fammilies. And for the people that has to clean them up. Also your all derailing the thread with train puns, lets change tracks to a whole other train of thought.
I don't see why the Transport Minister had to resign. Most of these kind of accidents are due to the incompetence of the driver of the vehicle. I just so happened that a lot of children died on this occasion.
One of the children must've said, "I like trains."
Christ, when was that joke even funny
Fuck me that's terrible. D:
Wrong thread

I just so happened that a lot of children died on this occasion.
I heard on the radio earlier that the whole Egyptian rail service is terrible and basically an accident waiting to happen. Such as this one and also people just use the tracks as a footpath. Apparently the guy at the rail crossing was ASLEEP and didnt lower the barriers, and hes been arrested. it even says at the bottom of this article: "Egypt's roads and railways have a poor safety record. An estimated 8,000 people die in car accidents each year in the country."
In my school district, all the buses stop for five seconds at every railroad crossing. Annoying shit.
That's federal law and also includes most trucks and big vehicles.
that law came out of my school when one of our buses was hit iirc. We're also responsible for the legal alcohol level in your blood being lowered
