Almost all the usual traffic is being cleared from the Grand Canal for several hours. The aim is to draw attention to the city's environmental problems, and help make the case for more ecologically-sound forms of water transport. The authorities would like to see a gradual switching to electric-powered craft, or boats with hybrid engines.
And here I was thinking they only used gondola's
So what, are they supposed to tie a bunch of turtles to their canoes instead?

I always thought that was cool, how the water flows between the buildings, but wouldn't it eventually erode the buildings away?
Why not just run across the rooftops and jump on those wooden poles?
Venice must be a terrible city for people that can't swim.
I wonder how deep those waters are
I always thought that was cool, how the water flows between the buildings, but wouldn't it eventually erode the buildings away?
Most of the city is built on pillars dating back hundreds of years. They have to keep adding new pillars and stuff to keep it up. The piles the city sits on are made from a wood notable for it's water resistance and wood does not decay as fast when completely submerged.
wood does not decay as fast when completely submerged.
Only if it's an anoxic environment.
Most of the lagoon is less than a meter deep. It's only large waterways like the Grand Canal which are deep, about 5 meters. What do they expect people to do, spend all their money on buying an electric boat?
Petrol fuels ARE environmentally friendly silly Venice, it's recycling dead dinosaurs!
Really interesting video. I should vacation to Venice at least once in my life.
If this goes forward, Motorboat engines in Venice are going to be really cheap.
For a second I thought they meant Venice, Florida.
But how will Indiana Jones escape from the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword now?
Venice is really nice to look at until you look at the water.
Only if it's an anoxic environment.
also depends on the type of wood.
So what, are they supposed to tie a bunch of turtles to their canoes instead?
yeah what do people ever do without gasoline i mean fuck electric motors and oars and every other mode of aquatic travel
yeah what do people ever do without gasoline i mean fuck electric motors and oars and every other mode of aquatic travel
it was a joke
yeah what do people ever do without gasoline i mean fuck electric motors and oars and every other mode of aquatic travel
Boat motors are expensive. A 15 horsepower electric outboard motor is around two thousand dollars.
Venice must be a terrible city for people that can't swim.
the water is gross, I doubt anyone swims in it
I was in Venice once. Didn't really see much cus I had a splitting headache that day so I just stayed in the hotel. Was nice from what I saw, though.
it was a joke
Not a very funny one at that.
Where are the fracking sidewalks.
Thought you meant Venice Beach [t]http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2588/4002658748_0d9e90007f.jpg[/t]
One of the things in my life I have to do is visit Venice.
Cartoons taught me that Venice's waterways were solely manned by gondolas with opera singing captains who serenaded you as they rowed you to your destination.
