Instead of announcing new things all the time, they should focus on the current stuff and finish them first.
Instead of announcing new things all the time, they should focus on the current stuff and finish them first.
This so much. Feature creep is not good for games in development.
To be honest, they get alot of more money if they use goals like this and I am sure they are hiring extra people with the millions that they get.
When will people realize this game is a scam. Its too profitable for it to be unreleased. Once they release it, they won't be making as much money. Don't forget, they missed two release dates already and the CEO quit/got fired.
They probably have more money than some small countries by now.
Instead of announcing new things all the time, they should focus on the current stuff and finish them first.
It's not like they stop working on the things they have already started so they can work on the new goals instead. They are just announcing new things to give people a reason to pledge. They're aren't really announcing new things, they're things they wanted in the game in the first place that they'll be able to do sooner with more money.
This so much. Feature creep is not good for games in development.
In what way is it feature creep? It's not like they just make up a new goal each time without having thought about it before, they've already planned for these things and they're just incentives for people to donate.
Instead of announcing new things all the time, they should focus on the current stuff and finish them first.
The majority of the stretch goals past about $23 million have been things like ships and systems that would have been in the game anyway, it's used more as a reveal of them than anything. This is just to form a separate team to research procedural generation to implement after release.
and the CEO quit/got fired.
Erm that never happened. The CEO is Chris Roberts. I'm pretty sure only one team member has quit since it came online. Also this isn't Feature creep, this is going to be for the first expansion to the game after release, there will be no more stretch goals that will be focusing on on-release day content.
Also this isn't Feature creep, this is going to be for the first expansion to the game after release, there will be no more stretch goals that will be focusing on on-release day content.
Where has this been said? The site mentions that they are going to have some stretch goals intended for after launch, but i can't see anything about there being no more on-release stretch goals.
Also this isn't Feature creep, this is going to be for the first expansion to the game after release, there will be no more stretch goals that will be focusing on on-release day content.
Where are the goals listed? This is the first time I heard about procedural generation.
The whole point of the stretch goals is to get more money to help development. For example it doesn't cost them $1 million to make a new ship, most of that money will be used in other places. The goals are just to give people reasons to donate more money, as well as allow things that were intended to be in the game in the first place be implemented sooner. They don't all suddenly stop working on things just to do whatever stretch goal has been met. This stretch goal is intended for post-launch anyway.
Where are the goals listed? This is the first time I heard about procedural generation.
You can see all the current goals here, including the ones already met: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/funding-goals Each time they reach one they announce a new one.
They won't live up to the created hype.
I feel like I should be posting this again. They have been talking about procedural generation for awhile now. And they hire new people almost on a weekly basis.
I think they have around 170 people working on Star Citizen, if I can recall correctly. It blows me away how much it's inflated; I remember about a year ago that was about 30-40 people. So they're definitely putting to money to good use.
Instead of announcing new things all the time, they should focus on the current stuff and finish them first.
"NUH UH CHRIS ROBERTS CAN DO ANYTHING NO MATTER WHAT IM NOT LISTENING YOURE STUPID OH GOD I SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON IT IT MUST BE GOOD PLEASE DONT FAIL"
I can't shake off the feeling that this game will be a terrible disappointing and always in a half-finished state once it's released. This game looks so ambitious and the large amount of money put into by people just built up so much hype.

It'll be a fun game but it won't be as amazing as everyone hypes it up to be.

Altough i have heard they are working on a new net code.
That's because it will be. It'll be a fun game but it won't be as amazing as everyone hypes it up to be.
What suggests it won't live up to the hype? There isn't anything i've seen that implies they won't be able to do what they are aiming for. I've seen lots of people say things like that but no one gives reasons other than stuff like "It's too ambitious". Everything they've shown so far has been how they said it would be. The only 'bad' thing I've seen is prehaps the instancing system, but that is understandable. Obviously if people are creating their own ideas about the game it probably won't meet those expectations, but i see no reason to believe the finished game won't fulfill the promises they've made and be what the developers are trying to achieve.

I'm trying to find some gameplay footage of this game but I can't find any? Is there any of the game other than this hanger stuff? I'm trying to work out why people are putting so much money into this because I can't see any footage of the actual game. Is there an NDA?

Is there an NDA?
I think that is a pretty silly thing to say, really. There is plenty to suggest the game will actually be what the developers say it is going to be. Star Citizen is being made by a team of highly skilled people, they know what they are doing. This isn't Chris Roberts' first space game, he's worked on others before and they are well known and popular games. The team are willing to change things if needed until they are happy with them, for example they updated some of the ships a while ago. Immersion is very important for the game and everything high a high level of functionality and detail. One of their recent videos showed how torpedos on one of the larger ships would actually reload which is something most other games wouldn't bother with at all. They won't release something half-finished just because people want it soon, that's why the DF module got delayed. Just because there isn't a large amount of gameplay footage doesn't mean the game is going to be bad. There isn't any finished gameplay footage because the gameplay isn't finished. The game is still in development and will be for a long time, nothing is finished yet. They do keep people updated on progress and regularly show what they are working on via the site, Wingmans hangar Episodes and other things though. There are plenty of videos and images that show how things are going. I have not seen anything that suggests the game is going to be bad and not be what they are trying to achieve. They aren't just making it up as they go, they are actually planning it all and know what they are capable of doing. All I see for reasons why people think the game will fail are things like “It's too ambitious”, there isn't anything they've done that suggests they won't be able to finish the game to the level of quality they are going for. It may take a while and there will be delays, but they definitely will not release a half-finished game that isn't even close to what people expect.

Because I absolutely don't think "Is there anything that suggests this game will live up to the hype" is a silly question, because people are throwing money at it. I've not seen anything that suggests that the game will live up to the hype, that's why I want to see something because I don't know enough about the game. [editline]23rd February 2014[/editline] I have been burned on almost every early access game I have funded, so I want to know why this is different

There isn't any actual finished gameplay videos because obviously nothing is done yet, but there are plenty of things that show what is being worked on and how things are progressing Here's something that shows some actual gameplay for ship battles. It's still quite early though: And then this recent video gives an example of the level of detail going into things at around 4.50:
How many people are working on this at the moment ? If a team of developers counting in the hundreds already has difficulties releasing a full blown AAA games where every promise delivers, I have a hard time seeing how an indie team of seemingly way less individuals can pull off the same results if not better. I haven't followed on this whole thing at all so sorry if I'm misinformed but they seem to really promise a LOT on this game.

On release, and that's going to be a muddy term with all these modules, I am fully expecting Star Citizen to be half the game it claims to be, and a quarter of what people think it will be. It'll probably still be a good game. After all, Freelancer was only a shadow of what CR originally planned it to be, and it's still one of my favorite games of all time.

They have several offices (some of them moved to a larger one recently) and over 100 people working on the game, although that doesn't include the other places helping with it as well. There are only crowd-funded so they wouldn't have to listen to a publisher telling them to change everything and so they could just make the game how they wanted it. They know what they are doing, Chris Roberts created Wing Commander and Freelancer so it's not like its the first space game he's worked on.
I'm sure its going to be a good game but god damn nightlord you don't have to turn every PR piece into gospel. Plenty of games that don't have publishers still end up sucking or not delivering. Nor is the Chris Roberts brand automatically fantastic since he's been involved in some awful projects as well.

Also more people working on the game doesn't mean that it will be any better, furthermore this can cause a tunnelvision of some sorts and all the different aspects of the game won't fit together well and will create a rather unfinished game. The thing with crowdfunding is that backers feel entitled to a good game and will be incredibly butthurt if the game doesn't turn out as they imagined. Wing Commander and Freelancer are great but nothing of this scale. The stakes are incredibly high with this game.
