• Need something to cool my Northbridge

Hey, Facepunch. I need something to cool my Northbridge chip. Either a new case or a new heatsink. My motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2 (rev 1.0), and the temp shows my Northbridge being at 87C on idle, and close to 100C on load (the TMPIN2 sensor in CPUID Hardware Monitor). I'm saving up for a new system and should have the money by the beginning of next year, but I wanna see if I can cool down the Northbridge chip first. Can you guys help me find some kind of cooling for my Northbridge? I know nothing of installing a fan on my motherboard or even touching it. I got this fear of fucking up something. I looked in Newegg for "Northbridge Fan" but it only gave me two results.
Get the Antec twelve hundred, unsurpassed Air cooling.
I doubt your Northbridge is that hot and your PC is still running. Take temperature readings with a pinch of salt, they are no where near as accurate as people assume.
Well. A few days ago I took my computer up to the shop in hopes of fixing an issue I have mentioned over and over in here. The guy touched my Northbridge and he says it felt like 85C on idle. He definitely says I need a way to cool it down. He said a fan would be my best bet. But if I was to get a fan, I wouldn't know how to install it. Is your processor OC'd?
Negative. So can someone show me a Northbridge cooler that would be compatible with my motherboard?
What case do you have currently
Kinda hard to explain. This is a custom, random case they used when they built my system back in 2005 with no name. Kinda looks like an old Alienware case. I got a few old pictures of when I got it, but the way I took it, it makes it look fat. Only differences are that it has a few new stickers on it. And I got a new CD Drive in it because my old one broke a month ago. Side; If I could find my digital camera, a battery for it, and the USB cable, I could take some better pictures. The case and the floppy drive are four years old. All of the hardware inside is under a year old. Including the case fan.
Can you show us a picture of the inside, please? Looks like airflow might be exacerbating the problem.
I finally found my old camera! It's a miracle! I'm working on getting those inside case pictures now. Give me about 10-15 minutes to get some good pictures. Here you go. Best I can get because I'm in a confined space (room is small); Tower (as of now) Inside pictures My Siig Soundwave 7.1 PCI sound card used to be in the bottom PCI slot. Took it out a few days ago because I don't need it anymore. And the fans are spinning. Doesn't look like it but they are. Hope that's good enough. I can't seem to get a picture of the back of my case. Apparently the flash thinks it's bright enough.
If you have an old molex or 3-pin fan lying around, plug it in and set it on top of your GPU and have it blow on the NB sink. This should tide you over until you get a new case. (Don't even bother replacing that NB heatsink as it's probably glued onto the NB and it would be nearly impossible to yank it off)
Hmm. Well you see I kinda... trust the guy that built my system more than myself when it comes to touching the inside of my system. It's a "God damn I'll fuck something up!" fear. The guy at the shop said what he could do is take a small fan and glue it to the Northbridge. As for if the Northbridge heatsink is glued on, there's these two plastic pins I saw that seem to be holding it in place. Tried to get a closeup picture of the Northbridge. It keeps getting blurry.
Get the Antec twelve hundred, unsurpassed Air cooling.
The HAF 932 has better cooling.
The HAF 932 has better cooling.
False. It's been proven on tomshardware
False. It's been proven on tomshardware
According to this it is better: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/full-tower-case,2105-10.html
What the hell were they doing to get the gpu's at 80c idle?
According to this it is better: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/full-tower-case,2105-10.html
Actually forget i said anything, i need sleep
The HAF 932 has better cooling.
By the time I have the money for a new system, there'll probably be something better. Anyway, am I being told the same thing, that there is no, non-nigger rig'ish way to cool down the Northbridge of my motherboard? Did Gigabyte think when they made this series of motherboards, that people would need a way to cool down the Northbridge? I'll let you guys know this. When I got my hardware back on October 2008, I had this same motherboard. I accidentally flashed the BIOS one day in another failed attempt to fix my issue, and had to get a exact replacement from the shop. Both of them had the Northbridge temp of 85-87C on idle. Right now I'm trying what's left that hasn't been done yet. This site that the guy that built my computer goes to, hardforum.com, said it was my Northbridge causing my lock ups. So I assume... Cool it down = Less lockups. Yet I'm being told in this thread it's amazing how my computer is still working, and how Northbridge coolers are normally used when overclocking. The guy said it doesn't matter if you overclock or not. That's why I'm either trying to find a way to cool the Northbridge, or get a script to quick save in Source games every 5 seconds.
Try and get an expansion slot fan, or just any fan really, and have it blow directly on it.

But to find one that works with my motherboard, and won't interfere with my GPU?
Find a 40 or 60mm fan, and a few screws, and bolt it directly to your NB HS. Sure, it'll be a whiny little bitch, but I did that until I got a new case and it worked fine. The fins on your HS look close enough together to hold a screw in; this is what they did for old gcards, for example.
This is what the motherboard looks like without all the cords and shit. Direct from Gigabyte's website; Just found out there's a new 3.0 revision of this motherboard. Interesting.
Here, when I was purchasing a new fan/heatsink for my cpu I found this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185039 Seems to be what your looking for.
Get the Antec twelve hundred, unsurpassed Air cooling.
What the hell are you on about? Theres no point in getting that case just to cool a north bridge.
What the hell are you on about? Theres no point in getting that case just to cool a north bridge.
The guy probably thinks I need a case with better cooling. Which I will get once I get my new system in 2010. [editline]05:32PM[/editline]
Here, when I was purchasing a new fan/heatsink for my cpu I found this. My case fan goes around 1650RPM on idle. I guess smaller fan = faster RPM. I might wanna get a better case fan as well.
