PETERSBURG, Russia -- Deep inside a four-story marble building in St. Petersburg, hundreds of workers tap away at computers on the front lines of an information war, say those who have been inside. Known as "Kremlin trolls," the men and women work 12-hour shifts around the clock, flooding the Internet with propaganda aimed at stamping President Vladimir Putin's world vision on Russia, and the world. The Kremlin has always dabbled in propaganda, but in the past year its troll campaign has gone into overdrive, adding hundreds of online operatives to help counter Western pressure over its role in the pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine. The program is drawing Serbia away from its proclaimed EU membership path and closer to the Russian orbit, and is targeting Germany, the United States and other Western powers. The operation has worried the European Union enough to prompt it to draw up a blueprint for fighting Russia's disinformation campaign, although details have not yet been released. Lyuda Savchuk, a single mother with two children, worked in the St. Petersburg "troll factory" until mid-March. The 34-year-old journalist said she had some idea of the Orwellian universe she was entering when she took the job, but underestimated its intensity and scope. "I knew it was something bad, but of course I never suspected that it was this horrible and this large-scale," she said in an interview in her apartment, which has colorful drawings on the walls for her two preschool-age children. She described how the trolls manage several social media accounts under different nicknames, such as koka-kola23, green--margo and Funornotfun. Those in her department had to bash out 160 blog posts during a 12-hour shift. Trolls in other departments flooded the Internet with doctored images and pro-Putin commentary on news stories that crop up on Russian and Western news portals. In some departments, she said, the trolls receive daily talking points on what to write and what emotions to evoke. "It seems to me that they don't know what they are doing," Savchuk said. "They simply repeat what they are told." She said most of the trolls are young and are attracted by relatively high monthly salaries of 40,000 to 50,000 rubles ($800 to $1,000).
Not surprising, just a bit depressing.
I'm not defending this, but you seriously have to be stupidly naive to believe that Russians are the only ones doing this. P much every nation in the world does this, it tries to propagate and manipulate information to general populace to suit it's interests (for example WMDs in Iraq). Something like this:
It probably costs less money to hire a thousand propagandists than fix actual problems.

fookin hell i do that for free and you can get paid ???
Where do I sign up?
i wonder if you can claim overtime for trolling on your offtime
Well, that explains /pol/ I guess.
http://translate.google.com.au/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://funornotfun.livejournal.com/&prev=search
Man, all those comments are written out like the titles of opinion pieces. "Game of Thrones is Good/Bad/Meh, but English/American are evil/dumb". Just need to add Ellipsis to finish it up and lead onto a conspiratory article. [editline]30th May 2015[/editline]
Well, that explains /pol/ I guess.
Things have never been so clear before.
Found out where Karimatrix works.
Where do I sign up?
$200-$250 per week is pathetic for work involving 12 hour days. Maybe not for Russians.
$200-$250 per week is pathetic for work involving 12 hour days. Uuuh every country has these, except you don't know about them
$200-$250 per week is pathetic for work involving 12 hour days. Maybe not for Russians.
The minimum monthly wage is 5965 rubles, which is 114 USD.

Both the US and the European Union have publicly admitted to spreading propaganda online.
It's been known for some time that weird russian and finnish forum profiles and suspicious facebook accounts actively comment finnish news and forum topics and they either promote russian politics or blame USA, NATO or certain politicians.
Propaganda army versus smartphone tapping. Time for a new Call of Duty game, it seems.
I don't know why you've got all those dumbs. Both the US and the European Union have publicly admitted to spreading propaganda online.
Because most of SH has a hateboner/bandwagon for me because I don't like to be in pro-west circlejerk.
No, it's probably because it's a very obvious example of whataboutism.
Because most of SH has a hateboner/bandwagon for me because I don't like to be in pro-west circlejerk.
No the actual problem is that you are the Kanye West of Sensational Headlines. ''iMMA LET YOU FINISH BUT AMERICA HAD ONE OF THE WORST FOREIGN POLICIES OF ALL TIME'' Face it, Russia is shit, America is shit, but at least in America you don't end up in the gulags.
Because most of SH has a hateboner/bandwagon for me because I don't like to be in pro-west circlejerk.
We have several Russian users who are well-respected and don't join in on the west-is-best wagon. It's pretty much just you, Karimatrix and the brit-dude with the pig-avatar whom I do not remember that get shot down in discussions like this.
No, it's probably because it's a very obvious example of whataboutism.
And what about whataboutism? This forum acts like they're superior to others going like "boo hoo poor Russians manipulated by their overlord Putin" while making an imaginary bubble around themselves thinking nothing is wrong and at the same time ignore shit like Operation Prism or the already forgotten "Fuck the EU" case and actually using whataboutism themselves. If you go with the "the news isn't about that" argument, then that just proves my point. There isn't fear of Russia on this forum, there is only blatant hatred as it can be seen with (mostly) western only news articles allowed, and even if something negative comes up about some western nation (aka UK pedophile case) it usually gets ignored or swept under the rug fairly fast. It's not that I like Russia, it's just that I extremely dislike retarded circlejerking and bandwagoning that's going on on this forum. Most of this forum is competition who will one-up each other and act morally superior, and it just proves how easy it is to manipulate people's opinions with a few simple ratings. PR firms which use internet to manipulate people are a real thing.
stop strawmanning my argument!!!!! i'm calling the fallacy police!!!!
Rofl so people should constantly be flooded with this type of articles and never see the other side aka Russia isn't the only "big bad one"? If you end up with articles only siding with (upper layer's) western views, then you will end up being no better than the Russia you're claiming that is today. Hell, just look at the North Korea thing going on, I am certain that more than half of the shit posted here about it is not true (and not saying that camps aren't). Again, I couldn't care less about Russia or Putin, it's just that hypocrisy found on this forum finds me dumbfounded.
yeah I know staying out of this because ppl get mad on both sides, shit like that seems inevitable

In fact most Facepuncher's seems to be quite neutral in a lot of matters, and are self-critical in a lot of cases.
If you go with the "the news isn't about that" argument, then that just proves my point.
That is a valid argument though. You made the first post in this thread and attempted to derail the thread, it's annoying. We're not idiots, we know USA does bad shit. And western only news articles? Those are the banned sources. Pretty sure non of them are from Russia. If you wanna post Russian news go do it instead of crying about it. You write about disliking circlejerking and bandwagoning, and here you are apparently trying to do the opposite of what "we" have been doing?
Face it, Russia is shit, America is shit, but at least in America you don't end up in the gulags.
Yeah, you just mysteriously vanish.
