• Crashing games, need help with troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I've got a problem. I'll be playing games and, for whatever reason, the game will lock-up, display the whole "<game> has stopped responding" window (sometimes), and the last little bit of audio will repeat infinitely unless I disable and re-enable my soundcard. Games that I've seen do this: - Team Fortress 2 - Call of Juarez - System Shock 2 - Max Payne - Garry's Mod ...it's happening with everything basically. Specs:
Operating System Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit CPU Intel Core i5 2300 @ 2.80GHz 43 °C Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology RAM 4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24) Motherboard Gateway DX4850 (CPU 1) 40 °C Graphics HP w2207 (1050x1680@59Hz) BenQ GW2255 (1920x1080@60Hz) BenQ GW2255 (1920x1080@60Hz) 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 (MSI) 51 °C Storage 93GB Hitachi HTS722010K9SA00 (SATA) 44 °C 931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX-00BN5A0 (SATA) 36 °C 1397GB Western Digital WDC WD15EADS-22P8B0 (SATA) 37 °C 1863GB TOSHIBA DT01ACA200 (SATA) 38 °C Optical Drives ELBY CLONEDRIVE SCSI CdRom Device Audio ASUS Xonar DGX Audio Device
Here's the work I've done so far: - I tested my HDDs with HD Tuner - I tested my memory with Memtest86 - I reinstalled my NVIDIA drivers and programs (without doing a completely-from-scratch uninstall with something like Driver Sweeper) - I monitored my graphics card while playing System Shock 2, where it maintained a steady 50-55 degrees I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?
Completely eliminated the idea of it being a memory problem. I thought I was low on memory and I'm up to 16 gigabytes now. Still crashing. I'm going to try a flat-out super clean removal of my drivers.
Have you tried playing without the soundcard installed? ie using the integrated audio. What audio drivers are you using for the xonar?
I was using the ones off the Asus website and double checked to see if I had the right ones. Then, hilarious enough, Windows stopped being bootable. I'm starting over on a new spare hard drive I was using for backups and seeing if the problem persists. If it still persists, the next step is arson.
Well I'd recommend just trying to play without the soundcard for diagnostic purposes. As for drivers, I'd recommend the Xonar Unified drivers from: http://maxedtech.com/asus-xonar-unified-drivers/ Yeah it hasn't been updated in awhile but it works perfectly fine on my Xonar DG (unless someone knows if the project got continued someplace else or something, but the page just got updated last month so I doubt it?).
That sounds like a plan, duder. I'm going all out on fixing my computer tonight.
So I got Windows 8.1 reinstalled on a new hard-drive, installed those fancy drivers, and found that my computer was BSOD'ing for "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT". I switched to my old memory, and that BSOD doesn't occur, but my game still locks up. So, the remaining parts that I have messed with: - Video Card - Motherboard - Processor - Sound Card - Power Supply I'm going to take out my sound card and use on-board audio. If that doesn't work, I'm going to flip into high-gear and remove my video card, playing with on-board graphics. [editline]1st April 2015[/editline] According to my hour-long gameplay with no crashes, it was my soundcard.
Get HW monitor and leave it open while playing a game. Check the max temps your components reach and post them here.
