The 3-step-plan detailed there is still vomitous for end users. I'm happy sticking with pure android phones, having recently upgraded from Moto G to Pixel.
Still looks like a huge hack, specially since this is going to be dependent on Google Play Services, at this point Android might just be called Google Play Services OS and that's horrible. Why doesn't Google just go The GNU Way(tm) and make their android rootfs monolithic for every phone like every linux distro ever? Libhybris based distros like Nemo and Sailfish have a single Rootfs for every phone, the only difference between phones is a small HAL layer that targets each phone, carriers can customize with an rpm package
Ideally manufacturers and carriers shouldn't have such a big influence that the end user can't do anything about post-purchase without root like they currently do. But yeah, the heavy dependence on Google play isn't something I fancy.
