Science broadcaster Karl Kruszelnicki says he will donate any income he receives for fronting the Abbott government's Intergenerational Report advertising campaign to government schools after admitting to "deep regret" over his role.
Fairfax Media revealed on Tuesday that the popular broadcaster, widely known as Dr Karl, believed the report was "flawed" because of the lack of attention it paid to climate change and his fear it had been "fiddled with" by the government.
Dr Kruszelnicki had previously admitted that he had not read the full report before agreeing to front the campaign, which is expected to cost millions of taxpayer dollars. He only had access to embargoed extracts.
"I deeply regret that I didn't get to see the full and final version," Dr Kruszelnicki said on Wednesday.
Dr Kruszelnicki initially said that he would keep his payment fee despite distancing himself from the report.
"What have I done wrong?" he told Fairfax Media. "As far as I'm concerned I was hired to bring the public's attention to the report. People have heard about this one where they hadn't heard about IGR one, two or three."
Dr Kruszelnicki said he had not been paid yet and was not aware what his fee was.
But on Wednesday night, Dr Kruszelnicki tweeted: "I have decided to donate any moneys received from the IGR campaign to needy government schools. More to follow tomorrow. Dr Karl."
The debate around the latest Intergenerational Report - a snapshot of Australia over the next 40 years - has become highly politicised, in part because it contains modelling of scenarios described by the government as Labor's policy settings.
Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen has called on the government to end the advertising campaign.
Dr Kruszelnicki said he has copped a backlash from fans for fronting the ads, with some calling him a "Liberal Party stooge".
dr karl is a mad cunt props to him tbh
I still think they should have interviewed him with like Leigh Sales and given him the same scrutiny they give politicians. They were too nice to him. I like Dr Karl but I think that interview with him wasn't explaining his position clearly enough.

Well he is in some way employed to the ABC because he does a little lunch time segment on Triple J (which is actually quite interesting and is always on when I'm leaving Uni) and they normally give ABC people a bit of niceness

And that is why I am annoyed. They shouldn't.
Not really surprising, it was odd as hell for him to be promoting libral policy, considering their stance on the issues.
He should have made better judgement when looking at the draft and he acknowledges that. Nobody is perfect and hopefully this improves reports in later years

It wasn't liberal policy, as he understood it. It was supposed to be an independant government report.

He's admitting mistake and trying to make good though, which is the exact opposite of any politician ever. A series of agreements and apologies from a well liked public figure isn't good tv like a hated pollie lying through their teeth and squirming.

Yes but he had better answers in him to the questions he was asked than the ones he gave.
