Surely companies can display whatever they want on their website as long as its not illegal?
This kind of thing confuses me, just because google is very clearly not the only search engine, and is not used really out of necessity or being forced upon people (windows and IE come to mind) people don't have to use google, theres also yahoo, bing, ask, and a few others, is just that google is considered the best.
This is just stupid. It's not Google's fault their competitors suck major ass. "You're the best so now you have to promote your competitors" what sort of nonsense is this? If anything, this undermines progress. The fact that a company gets into legal trouble for advertising their products on their site just baffles me.
Just watch these assholes ruin the only search engine worth using.

Try convincing your average Joe of that. You're probably overestimating what many people with access to computing know.

In a sense, it is being forced on people when it comes as a default on almost every browser.

This is more of a hivemind thing in my experience. Similar to how Internet Explorer's been bashed in the past (although that was reasonable). I've been yelled at before for "not doing what normal people do" because I don't use Google Anything, refusing to go to YouTube, etc.

It's like you guys are trying to justify a monopoly just because it's your precious search engine who also owns some of the most popular entertainment web sites eg. because their own products weren't doing so well compared to the competition (see: YouTube).

Except when you have what is basically a monopoly, you're in a very good position to start abusing it.
For example, charging more for your competitors (for shopping or whichever) to advertise on your search services while your own are basically free of charge whenever you want them. And since your competitors are basically forced to advertise with you because that's how you find things, they don't really have a choice.
That's the whole issue.
Or basically from the article: "The real remedy is for Google to use the same algorithm for third-party sites that it applies to its own"
refusing to go to YouTube, etc.

You REFUSE to go to youtube? That's a snob thing to do

Sounds like a good choice, it will still keep google results on top while hopefully pleasing the law.
