• "Cowboy" developers to re-build 159-year-old pub that they illegally demolished
The "cowboy" developers who illegally knocked down Carlton's Corkman Irish Pub have apologised for their demolition of the 159-year-old hotel, and have said they will rebuild it. They have also hired well-connected Labor lobbyists and spin doctors to help them negotiate with the Andrews government. Late on Thursday afternoon, Raman Shaqiri and Stefce Kutlesovski sent a letter to Planning Minister Richard Wynne saying they were sorry for knocking down the historic pub without warning. "We want to make absolutely clear that we will rebuild the building at our expense," the pair said in their letter, which was given to The Age by Labor-linked lobbyist Erik Locke and former Labor lord mayoral candidate Will Fowles, whose firm Piper Communications is also working for them.

Mr Shaqiri is a registered builder and demolisher – and is required under the terms of his license to be aware of strict rules surrounding major building works of this type. The company ignored a stop work order issued by Melbourne City Council's Municipal Building Surveyor Joseph Genco, and left behind asbestos among the rubble that remained once their work was done at the Carlton site.
Source (and pictures):http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/we-will-rebuild-it-developers-say-sorry-hire-lobbyists-and-spinners-20161027-gscg0d.html?eid=socialn%3Afac-16omntEN0125-eng-FB-22092016-Editorial_Social_Boosted-nnn-nnn-nnn-AGE-nnn&campaign_code=Editorial_Social_Boosted&promote_channel=AGE_A_SM_FB_NE&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=editorial&utm_content=boostedposts
Rebuild at their expense aka do a really shitty job on the cheap
Good on you law students
The pair said they had been "naive" not to front the public earlier, but had "hoped to deal with this through formal processes". Before Mr Wynne announced he was seeking orders against them, the pair had proven hard to contact. Despite having knocked down the pub on October 15 and 16, calls to Mr Shaqiri's mobile went either unanswered or answered by a man claiming not to be him.
Sounds like a couple of real trustworthy gents. Fuck allowing them to rebuild it - Take them to court, take enough money from them to hire reputable experts in the field of restoring historical buildings, pay them to do it instead. The more, the better.
lol you can't rebuild a heritage building. It won't be the same. Also, its bad enough they knocked it down, but leaving behind asbestos is just fucking atrocious.
This is just a quick bargain to avoid lawsuits. Its like when your flight gets cancelled and you accept their silly hotel offer rather then a full refund
they should be thrown in prison. the miserable old fucks. i fail to see how this is anything other than an act of massive vandalism.
I've always felt like flagrant disregard for heritage sites like this should be punished with imprisonment. Like history doesn't have enough problems between time and weather.
I think I might have seen these guys on tv before. Yeah here they are.

Then they found out afterwards - and because the asbestos was a now part of the rubble, it means everything is contaminated and now all rubble has to be treated as if it was asbestos. What makes it worse is that they then tried to dump the rubble on another one of their nearby work sites so they would have to pay less asbestos removal fees (due to all rubble now having to be treated, which is substantially more expensive than general landfill), adding it to the rubble of the second site - and they got caught, which now means they need to do asbestos removal on that other site too!

When you see it, you'll think it was built in the 1800s
