Occupy Protestors Disrupt, Shut Down Production of ‘Law & Order: SVU’
[release]Last month, Occupy Wall Street protestors almost ended up in the background of some scenes for The Dark Knight Rises, the final movie of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy, but the producers ended up scrapping the idea. Now a popular TV show is facing its own problems trying to incorporate the Occupiers into its plotline. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is in New York filming episodes, and they intended to film a scene with the protestors in the background.
This rallied the protestors to declare that they were not going to be used as tools for the corporate media, and they protested the show’s presence at their event.
The protestors could not get too close to the filming site, but on midnight Friday police announced the show’s filming permit had been lifted and production for the scene ended up grinding to a half.
It’s the kind of thing that makes you wonder if Tony Baloney will end up making a special appearance.[/release]

I fucking love SVU, don't really see this as news though
Well they were trying to make money off of it.
what if those were actually the extras and they were just doing a really good job of acting like OWS protestors?
'Mainstream media doesn't give us any coverage'
'OMGWTFBBQ time to protest that we are being incorporated into mainstream media!'

When have Occupiers ever complained about not getting coverage?

I've heard people say that news corporations are trying to avoid showing the protests, but that's it. And the news here isn't being particularly quiet about it, either.

Yeah, they complain that they don't show certain parts, or that it's biased and inaccurate, but I can't remember anything about not getting coverage

Being presented in the media is a little different than being forced to be an extra in a detective drama
Oh god damnit OWS, fuck off. SVU is awesome, how dare you morons get in the way of filming it. It's just a harmless detective show anyway, if you must protest the media go fuck Fox News over instead.
I see neither law nor order.

There's a big difference between being taken seriously without bias in the mainstream media and having a shitty TV show try to profit off your grueling protest by using you as extras.

Did you even read the article or are you just dumbing up the thread for the hell of it?
I would have loved to unintentionally be an extra in a movie or TV show.

I think that it would kind of trivialise the protest if people up and went "Well that was totally worth it".
Plus it kind of defeats the purpose to be totally fine with being used like this without any kind of compensation beyond "you get to be on the show in a crowd of fifty people".
I'm sorry. I support a lot of OWS causes, like income inequality protest and the absolutely insane cost of college.
But I always feel like punching somebody in the face when I hear things like "We're not going to be used as tools for corporate media!" I feel like they'll go home and blog about it on their Macbook on Tumblr while drinking bottled water and text updates from their iphones to Twitter, completely oblivious or just not caring that they're supporting these "evil" corporations all the time, willingly.
I know I'm just stereotyping, but that's the image that instantly comes to mind

Clearly he believed the show to be as real and factual as any news program.
