I have a small home server, and the hard drive failed on it last week, so I replaced it with an old 40Gb IDE drive. It had XP on it until I decided that I would like vista. I used the CD from my Laptop to install as its now got Windows 7 on it, but during the installation the setup says that there are no drives available. The weird thing is, is that I can see it when I run a portable linux OS, and I can also format it using the portable OS.
So then I decided to install XP back on it. The setup can find the drive and copy files across etc but when it restarts after the initial setup step, it says; "Invalid Boot.ini file. Booting from C:/Windows", restarts then says that again. Does anybody know what I could do to either get back into XP, or get vista to see the drive.
Thanks :)

Those usually install their own drivers for their hardware. If it can't find HDs my guess is that it is looking for something specific.
