I honestly think this is a great idea. With the ability to offer content as a "pay what you want" model, or for free, users can decide to support creators of great content with what they decide the content is worth, or what they have available. The cool thing is that this doesn't have to mean a shitton of expensive useless crap, considering the popularity of that would quickly fall to the ground, so an open and hopefully fair marketplace where people can publish free and great content, or paid premium content that consists perhaps of something that wasn't possible before due to, say, licensing.

Otherwise what's the point in making games when you could make a shitty mod, and charge $10 for it. Another thing to add to Valve's rap sheet.
Valve c'mon, don't do this shit.

Why can't someone make a great game altering modification and then make money off of it, in order to make their work doable?

Get fucked

Not liking this at all. I hate all forms of micro-transactions as is, this feels like such a shitty thing to do. If this spreads it could seriously harm the modding scene. It's already breaking up the community and the source of mass hatred towards Valve and Bethesda. Smooth move, great PR. Also this is going to be such a honeypot for those who just want to rip people off with shit mods. If there's no quality control for greenlight, I doubt there will be any here. I think some easy method of donating through Steam would be much better than this "mod store". I agree with this Forbes article
Otherwise what's the point in making games when you could make a shitty mod, and charge $10 for it.
It depends on the complexity of the mod. I have no problem paying talented people for very well done and big mods and I will boycott anyone selling a shitty mod for $10. Of course some idiots will try to make money with shitty mods first but they will get no support.
Valve c'mon, don't do this shit.
I don't know how everyone assumes that this was Valve's idea alone and they are the only ones profiting from this. Skyrim is not a Valve game, of course Bethesda/Zenimax and the Bethesda Game Studio were involved in this agreement.
Why are mods supposed to be free? If you show promising effort in your work people will assuredly support you through those means so that they can see the end result, however if you're only doing mods for profit you're in the wrong business. Now we've got the potential to make more profit off a single ingame item than large teams of semi-pro modders working on extensive projects like Project Brazil.
The fact there are paid mods doesn't bother me. The 25/75 split doesn't bother me (quite royal from a business perspective really). It's a great leap forward for user created content and we won't be able to judge its effect until we're a few years down the line. The thing that bothers me is that the workshop system can't police for shit at the moment. There are going to be a lot of copyright violations and stolen work popping up. And that just brings down the reputation of the whole system. I'd just wish there was a simple and fast system for verifying creators as legit before letting them up pricetags on stuff. Valve loves their hands-off approach but it's questionable whether it'll work out in the end.
I'd gladly pay $5 for a huge total conversion mod. $1 for an armor set or a graphics engine value tweak? Get fucked
Well, don't pay for it then? Or even better, make it yourself since it's so simple.
