About time. By releasing the L4D games without server-based map downloading, I thought the series was valves attempt to stop caring for the custom communities.

They still don't care. This is just another attempt to make people believe they still do.
They're trying to keep L4D2 alive? Nice
South of the border?
Warcelona takes place in Spain, not Mexico.

Not cool, man.
On a more positive note I'm glad they're actually working on the Steam Workshop integration now.
kinda wish we could get a new valve campaign. Never really liked community campaigns much. They just don't have the right feel.
Say, concerning Left 4 Dead 2, it seems that on average around 13k people are still playing it to this day. Hopefully the new Workshop implementation may help to revitalize it, since if people made true mods for L4D2, as opposed to campaigns and skins (which are still legit content), there might even be hope for someone to make a mod that involves actual survival, like travelling around dilapidated cities and gathering resources to bring back to a makeshift "stronghold".
It'd be sort of like DayZ crossed with Minecraft, substituting blocks and griefing for base-building and resource gathering, whilst generally staying alive and sane in the dead future. Hell, add in a road trip to the West a'la Organ Trail and you'd have a progressive story woven into it. Come to think of it, Valve should really make this survivalist Left 4 Dead; from where I'm standing it'd be a fair bit more engaging than just going through a horde of zombies just to escape, since this time you'd be going through the hordes to gather the stuff you'd need in order to survive in a world brought to its knees by the "Green Flu".

Talk about high hopes, I don't see why L4D2 would have full conversion mods considering portal 2, TF2, CS:GO and such don't have them. Much less one as outrageous as that.

Not possible unless Valve releases the source code.
Which I doubt will happen.

Left 4 Dead with open-world gameplay (like DayZ) seems like it would be a lot of fun

TF2 has full conversion mods depending on your definition.
Saxton Hale Mod,
Zombie Mod,
Parkour Fortress,
MGE Mod,
Prophunt,
And many, many more vastly change the gameplay of team fortress.
And CS:GO already has zombie escape and surfing servers.
Although, Portal 2 and DotA 2 are very closed, moreso that windows 8 perhaps.
To be honest, most of the community maps are total crap, either unbalanced or bad looking. Besides it is hard to find people playing a certain type of map, making all this even more complicated.
I literally just uninstalled L4d2 yesterday. Look like I am going to have to redownload it soon.
I honestly need an excuse to play it, and a new campaign plus workshop just might be it.
I've said this before, but it's still true: Left 4 Dead series has always been the odd man out when it comes to Valve games. It's really fun and has a huge replay value like other Valve titles, but it just doesn't mesh with Valve's "Games as a Service" strategy.
Part of that is it's just too hard to make new campaigns when a campaign consists of new maps (Plural), new voice acting, etc, it just takes too many resources.
On the other hand, Workshop support is a nice addition, but like many have said, I too feel that many custom maps (Even the highest revered maps) just lack that same charm without the voice acting/story.

None of those are full conversions.

How did they get to Spain?
I wish they cared for this game more and tried harder to expand it. I wouldn't even care if they tried to go in the War Z/Day Z direction with it to be honest.
I thought the engine was limited on the amount of props etc you could have in 1 map hence the loading between sections in hl2 or am I wrong? So a dayz conversion wouldn't work
they flew on coach airlines
Would have been better if you said "they flew coach".
Warcelona is the best custom campaign I have ever played, if you haven't played it don't say "Ehh they just don't have the valve-touch." because this campaign is better than valve-quality.
I always feel Left 4 Dead has been Valve's unloved child
they never touch it
they never update it
they pretend it doesn't exist at christmas parties
let it die gracefully
boycott successful

They even forgot its birthday this year.
moreso that windows 8 perhaps.
What does that have to do with anything? Windows 8 isn't closed.
Also how are the beta invite going to be distributed? Are they going to be handed out randomly or will there be a survey or something?
Where is that screenshot from
Everyone hated them for making Left 4 Dead 2 instead of Half-Life 3, can you really blame them for abandoning it

The sacrifice trailer.

I wouldn't keep playing it over and over on my own, but you have to admit when you've gathered 2/3 of your mates for a quick little game of L4D it's pretty damn fun
