• Paul McCartney and Kanye West team up for "Only One"
Written from the perspective of Kanye's late mother Donda, who died in 2007 from surgery complications, "Only One" sounds like a bittersweet bonus track from Kanye's 808s and Heartbreak. "Remember how I'd say one day/You'll be the man you always knew you would be," West's Auto-Tuned voice sings. "And if you knew how proud I was/You'd never shed a tear/Have a fear/No you wouldn't do that." McCartney, for his part, eschew any histrionics in favor of a simple and plaintive style befitting the emotional lyrics. "My mom was singing to me, and through me to my daughter," West said in a statement, also noting that the name "Kanye" means "Only one." Just sounds like a clusterfuck of autotune than a sweet ballad IMO...
I like both The Beatles and Kanye West but this track just felt really uninspired and dull, even considering the backstory of it.
the press release for this (from pitchfork):
In early 2014, Paul McCartney and Kanye West first began working together in a small bungalow in Los Angeles. The process that would result in "Only One" began with a simple brainstorming session between the two: With McCartney improvising on the keyboards and Kanye vocally sketching and shaping ideas in a stream-of-consciousness riff. When they played back the recording afterward, something remarkable happened. Kanye sat there with his family, holding his daughter North on his lap, and listened to his vocals, singing, "Hello, my only one . . . " And in that moment, not only could he not recall having sung those words, but he realized that perhaps the words had never really come from him. The process of artistic creation is one that does not involve thinking, but often channeling. And he understood in that moment that his late mother, Dr. Donda West, who was also his mentor, confidante, and best friend, had spoken through him that day. "My mom was singing to me, and through me to my daughter," he said, astonished. The small group in the room kept listening: “Hello my Only One…just like the morning sun…you’ll keep on rising till the sky knows your name.” To some, Kanye's insight didn't immediately register. But then he explained: The name Kanye, which his mother had chosen, means "only one." And then it dawned on everyone there: Something powerful and undeniable had occurred through the power of music and of letting go. A message had been passed down through generations.
this song is fantastic.
Not really sure how we got from a song "Piss On Your Grave" to a ballad about Kanye's mum
It's a good song but I'm not a fan of the auto tune
Holy SHIT that guy from /mu/ claiming to be part of the production team for Kanye wasn't lying
Knowing Kanye's backstory with his mother, I think this song is beautiful.
Song's dope Kanye's dope Can't wait for new album
the backstory, lyrics, 808s reminiscent sound, everything about this song is beautiful. it's emotional but so positive at the same time.
Holy SHIT that guy from /mu/ claiming to be part of the production team for Kanye wasn't lying
Explain
Damn, the autotune is extremely unnecessary and off-putting, and I say that as someone who typically doesn't mind the presence of autotune (whether obvious or otherwise).
People are putting too much attention on the autotune again tbh. It never ruined his songs and it never will. It's his style and what his fans like after all.
People are putting too much attention on the autotune again tbh. It never ruined his songs and it never will. It's his style and what his fans like after all.
I wish I could hear it without it to compare.
I wish I could hear it without it to compare.
Here's a song where he sings (another about his mum) where he doesn't use autotune.
every time I hear autotune the only thing I can think of is this
song of the year tbh and its 2nd of january
Pretty solid example of Kanye using autotune as a vocal effect incredibly well
listened to the song about 2 days ago because it was "leaked" on soundcloud, and it's great. i hope it's a happy 808s.
Just sounds like a clusterfuck of autotune than a sweet ballad IMO...
Could be similar to what Bushido did with gott. Which was fairly nice.
I don't like it.
good on you then [editline]4th January 2015[/editline]
Pretty solid example of Kanye using autotune as a vocal effect incredibly well
Did they really have him just do the backing noise?
the pitch correction is really annoying. could be a sweet song without it
this song would be amazing but the autotune is so awful
Did they really have him just do the backing noise?
It's more than common for producers to help each other often in tracks. Kanye once asked Timbaland for help in "Stronger" and all he did was add the kick.
good on you then [editline]4th January 2015[/editline] Did they really have him just do the backing noise?
and the piano I believe, I think Hudson Mohawke did the drums
I thought it might've been a much better song without the autotune. It just didn't fit the tone at all.
Kanye is a fish, he sounds like he sings underwater.
That the man who together with Lennon wrote this: Then decided to make a song with that guy beats me entirely.

It's nice of him.
