Disney Infinity details the beginning of the end of online functionality for the toys-to-life franchise, and reveals that many gamers won’t even be able to play offline.
After years of success, fans of the toy-to-life trend were shocked to learn that the Disney Infinity series would be ending abruptly. Disney Interactive has now gone on to officially announce when Disney Infinity online services will end, and that some gaming systems won’t have access to the game at all anymore.
Disney Infinity officials have made it clear that gamers will continue to be able to play Disney Infinity offline on consoles for the forseeable future. However, with the end of the game’s production, the online services will be taken offline over the course of the next year. The breakdown of when gamers can expect the services to no longer be available and whether they can continue playing the game offline depends upon what version of Disney Infinity they own and what system they’re playing it on.
Oh well fuck you then Disney, Ill just start throwing my figures in a pyre.
in cases like these, the developers should just release the server software or whatever that's needed to have the game playable. they have nothing to lose on it, right? it's either dying or letting the fans take over.

Source is sensationalist.
we really need some lawful precedent stopping companies from arbitrarily shutting people out of their games through irresponsibly online-only practices

maybe try reading the rest which explains that not every platform the game was sold to will still have access

No? The game won't work for non-console players at all afterwards. That's what "many" means.
Every time I go to the mall or target or walmart or whatever and see these dinky little Disney Infinity figurines for like 29.99, I can only ask myself "What the fuck, why are these worth buying?"
Moreso now that this is shutting down
Not so much these days. I managed to get a bundle for 2.0 with 5 figures and the game for 10 bucks at Walmart yesterday. Toys R Us has the 1.0 and 2.0 figures for a little south of 4 bucks. Just about every store that carries them has gone into complete liquidation mode.

You could say the same for Amiibos, even if they're about half the price, but then those at least have various games they can work for and are also partially intended for those who just like to collect these kinds of things. The Infinity figurines were an attempt to cash in on the Skylanders craze, but I guess it never kicked off anywhere near as strongly like Skylanders or Amiibos did.

The figures aren't worth it, that's the issue. Disney Infinity did insanely well at first, but mismanagement has caused Disney to lose an insane amount of money on it afterwards, generally by producing unwanted figures thanks to shareholder influences, and producing a ludicrous amount of figures that would never be sold. I believe the reports ~2 months ago stated that they produced 2 million Hulk figures, as a response to the first series of DI figures selling out in no time, and only ended up selling 1 million of said Hulk figures. Etc.
A trainwreck to say the least, and it's sad that so many people get fucked over.

It still did quite well, especially the Star Wars ones.

I was holding out hope we would get some Darkwing Duck figures because he has some power discs in game. But I guess not.

I'm literally hesitant on buying multiplayer games where the dedicated server part isn't something you can self-host.
Also same with chat services, which is why I'm REALLY not a big fan of Discord replacing TeamSpeak or Mumble.

The Developer doesn't exist any more. Disney fired every last one of them.
This fucks over PC players mainly doesnt it?

Reader is inattentive.
Well I can't wait to see Star Wars characters in Lego Dimensions with infinity shutting down.

WB is supposedly in talks with Disney to get license for Marvel/Star Wars, maybe some of the other stuff idk.

As far as I can see only mobile and windows store versions will stop working. But PC version is still inferior to console versions - it haven't got any of the wave 2 and 3 content and never will.

I just hope that Lego Dimensions is doing well enough that so this doesn't happen to them.
Well, of course. This is just one more example of the old guard at Disney not "getting" video games.
First they force Avalanche to make mindbogglingly stupid production decisions (manufacturing two million Hulk figures when less than two million units of 1.0 were sold, adding Yondu, a character no one asked for and, surprise, they couldn't give away).
Despite this, DI still manages to make out with 1.4 BILLION dollars last Holiday season.
Then, oopsie, Shanghai Disneyland starts hemorrhaging money because they couldn't be bothered to have dependable contractors.
Then, double oopsie, they spent a billion dollars on the NBA for rights to air their games on ESPN, which fails to buoy that sinking ship.
So, their response is to immediately cut half their ABC line-up (including Galavant, Muppets, and two Marvel series in production) and can Disney Infinity.
So, you know how this is going to pan out. Disney games are going to be disposable crap for the next decade until someone at Disney gets the brilliant idea to bring video games in-house so they can control quality.
And the cycle continues.
