Sound still plays through laptop speakers when output is plugged in

I recently put Ubuntu 11.04 on both of my laptops (an HP tc1100 and a Compaq tc4200), and they work perfectly. I'm having a problem with the sound though. When I have headphones/external speakers plugged into either of the laptops, sound still continues to play out of the laptop's speakers in addition to the external ones. Fiddling with sound preferences hasn't seemed to have any effect, so I need some help here. Thanks!
Check if you have something called "Jack Sense" in audio panel.
Nope.
Maybe try switching to ALSA? It works like a charm for me, though the audio preview in Nautilus won't work:

You could, however look around the PulseAudio mixer, not GNOME mixer.
