I'm fairly sure this will make the transition from current gen to next gen so much easier than before. Sony is pulling off a godly move here.

ah, it still costs a bit to upgrade but still, I'd prefer that over buying it again :v:
It would be nice if there was a way you could add games you own for PS3 to the Gaikai thing so you could download them on PS4.
However I'm not sure how they'd do that since you could just rent a game and stick the disk in.
I almost can guarantee GTA V will do this
GameStop will also let you trade your ps3 or 360 disk for a ps4 or Xbox one version of the game for $10.00

I'm pretty sure it will. A guy I was talking to yesterday at eb games said Rockstar will probably just do an upgrade from the console to next gen console. He also said it probably won't cost more than $10.
The Wii U lets you play Wii games at no cost and you don't have to wait for a rerelease.
what the PS4 is doing sounds like 360 backwards compatibility

I think it's more games that are mostly ports from the PS3 to the PS4 will be provided the assets that the PS4 version uses, meaning you won't need to buy two versions.

It's not backwards compatibility. It's literally upgrading your game to the Next-Gen version.

Clerks at game stores don't know any more about game news than anyone else who reads internet articles regularly. Nothing is announced, so anything said by anyone at this point is complete speculation or rumor.

I don't think you understand what this is about...
I really hope they do this in the future, and at least try to make some upgraded HD versions of some favorites and make them 1080p instead of shitty 720p.
So what about PS2 games then?
I'm pretty damn sure it's possible to fabricate a PS2 SoC nowadays for cheap.

fabricating it? sure
designing it? total waste of money, there's no demand - the ps2 only left production last year, there are millions of fully functional consoles very cheap
So, do you have to pay AGAIN if you want to play your PS3 games on PS4? That's a stupid idea, if you already paid for that game, why would you pay again?

If you don't want to pay again, don't buy the current gen version.
So, do you have to pay AGAIN if you want to play your PS3 games on PS4? That's a stupid idea, if you already paid for that game, why would you pay again?
Its only $10 more....and you get the next gen version.
Seriously people....why is this so hard to understand? The fact you can buy a PS3 version when it launches, and then pay $10 to upgrade to the PS4 version when it comes out is fucking AWESOME!

Surely the PS4 must be powerful enough to emulate PS2?
Surely the PS4 must be powerful enough to emulate PS2?
Powerful PCs still have trouble emulating a lot of PS2 games, emulation is extremely inefficient

Well Sony knows the architecture of the PS2 down to it's smallest bit.
So they're the only one's in position to make a efficient emulator.

Yes, but its been nearly 6 years since anyone at Sony (that being the software devs) have actually used or coded for the machine, while they have technical documents of its insides there's gonna be the devs that know handy tricks that the tech docs don't have

While I agree it should be free, it's literally the same game with mor grafix.
but something is better than nothing. You're finding things to complain about that wouldn't exist if they didn't feel they should communicate trust between their customers.

Hacky emulators based on incomplete specs have trouble emulating ps2 games. Sony on the other hand has everything needed to pull of a nonproblematic emulator at home.
I wish I could do this with GTA V so I can upgrade to the PC version.

I wonder if this is only with certain games because my friend has hacked his PS2 emulator to output Fatal Frame (not sure which one) in perfect stereoscopic 3D, and it does it at perfect FPS and no observable visual glitches at 1080p on his projector.
Its pretty damn crazy playing fatal frame at 1080p in (rather well done) 3D.

With an i5 I can emulate the PS2 almost flawlessly myself, it's not that hard these days
I've been playing through Persona 3 and Kingdom Hearts and had no issues at all running the games at 1080p as well

I tried playing P3FES on a PS2 emulator with my i5 and it ran like garbage.
Oh, fucking wonderful, I can pop in the disk for a game I ALREADY OWN and Sony will hit me up for more money before I can play it. What a completely arbitrary cash grab.

So what you'd rather pay 60 for the PS4 version? Because this is the PS4 version for free. Your game disk is a discount coupon ya dingus.
