Total system freezes/crashes, no longer just within games

My system has never been the most stable setup, and i frequently mod my Bethesda games, which sometimes causes crashes. the Windows reliability monitor graph looks like a rollercoaster. What's worrying is that the games never just crash to desktop (i'm lucky if i can get back to the desktop), but freeze the whole computer and require a manual shutdown, or, sometimes, the computer will just automatically restart.
In the last week, playing (modded) Fallout 4, i started to get complete lockups. If it happened, it would happen within a half hour of starting the game, and only once did it not happen. That time i was able to play for a couple of hours.
But the most worrying thing is that a few days ago, my computer locked up twice while i was not in game. At least one of those times, i was managing files related to Fallout 4.
I'm worried this is hardware related. I'd really like this system to be more stable, especially since i plan on upgrading the processor soon.
Do these symptoms point to any common issues? What kind of further diagnosing can i do to help identify the problem(s)?

Yeah, it just happened again. was just browsing the internet, no other operations going. Last thing i did was watch a youtube video, after closing it and reading a thread, everything locked up, and i shut it down manually. Uptime was maybe 40 minutes.
If your computer freezes instead of crashing, like the picture stays on but your mouse, game etc. stop moving suddenly, it could be your MB caps.
I had a very similar issue with my last computer. Basically everything would just....stop, and always without prior slowdown or other warning signs. I had some PC repair experience from my job at the time and I took a flashlight and checked the caps. I counted like five caps leaking and more bulging.
We got a few PCs with these kinds of problems and it was always the MB caps. Usually happens on old computers.
I've had this issue as well and traced it down to firefox causing it. So I switched to chrome.
Now it happens in chrome as well. It almost exclusively happens when watching youtube videos, which I have running in the background very often.
Once it happened right after I sent a program I was working on into an infinite loop, while youtube ran in the background, but I wasn't able to make it happen again by doing the same things.
I found out that if you turn off hardware acceleration in firefox it will stop happening. It seems to be a common problem with it. After I have it hasn't happened in at least 2 weeks, but the second I start a video in chrome (last time I tried another one was running in firefox but was paused) it can freeze within seconds. Though it's seemingly random but can happen at least once every two hours.
Do a memtest and leave it on for a few hours.

You'll need a spare USB drive for this.
Is this worth trying if the windows 8.1 memtest didn't identify and problems?
Also, what sort of hardware could be causing this to happen, gpu or ram? Maybe a driver issue?
Hard drive problems can also cause this. Run chkdsk c: /r and reboot your machine.
Go watch a movie or two or wait to go to work, as it will take a few hours.
