I don't want to bother with buying something I won't eventually get. I live in NSW, but also about 10 mins walk from the VIC border, so I can get it shipped to either state, if that matters.

No it won't. My dad has been chief/director of multiple ports of entry(US). No customs world wide would let a gun shaped object past the xray without tearing apart your bags to find out what it is. In the end it will probably get confiscated. The very least, your bags will be opened and searched, gun checked out, and all taped together with customs tape.
