A campaign to rename the tower housing Big Ben after the Queen has received the backing of the majority of MPs. More than half have signed up to the proposal outlined in a letter to name the iconic east tower of the Palace of Westminster the Elizabeth Tower. A group of 40 MPs has already signed a Commons early day motion on the matter. Conservative Tobias Ellwood's motion is backed by all three main party leaders and comes as Britain prepares to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The Bournemouth East MP aims to raise the matter formally later this month. He said the clock tower should be formally named in honour of the Queen, in recognition of 60 years' of unbroken public service for her country. "Commemorating such an iconic landmark is indeed a truly exceptional tribute and I am grateful that a majority of MPs have now confirmed that the Queen deserves such an outstanding accolade," he said. At present the famous central London landmark is described by the Palace of Westminster as the Clock Tower. When the Palace of Westminster was rebuilt in 1860, the west tower, then known as the King's Tower, was renamed the Victoria Tower to commemorate the long reign of Queen Victoria. She is the only other monarch to complete 60 years on the throne. Big Ben is the nickname for the 13.5 tonne bell contained in the tower. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-18305664
define public service
Was thinking of the band
Thats like re-naming the Skydome to the Rogers Centre.... People know it as the Big Ben, it's engraved in world culture I mean ffs it's in Slumdog Millionaire!
Well the tower is currently just called 'The clock tower' isn't it? Edit: Yes it is, I don't see the harm in naming it after the current monarch. It's not like anyone is going to be confused when people continue using it's nickname to refer to it.
Was thinking of the band
i honestly think the band would deserve it more

What's the craze with naming everything after old-as-hell people?
Its just renaming the actual tower which most people don't even know about into something else. I see no harm in doing this, its not like they are going to name it "Ticky Tocky Dingy Dong".
I kind of like the name "The Elizabeth Tower"...
When the Palace of Westminster was rebuilt in 1860, the west tower, then known as the King's Tower, was renamed the Victoria Tower to commemorate the long reign of Queen Victoria.
So basically, let's rename the tower after every monarch that passes?
I don't live in the country but I'd say it's definitely ingrained in today's society as 'big ben', as the tower itself Perhaps on the day of the jubilee or whatever.
I honestly had no idea the tower itself wasn't called Big Ben. I've always thought the whole thing was Big Ben. I've been living a lie.
The tower does not deserve such shame.
I'm opposed to this for the sole reason being that I live on Queen Victoria Lane, and changing the name would give those fuckers on Queen Elizabeth Lane something to hold over our heads for all of time.
Hi I'm cool because I don't like the Queen lol let me tell you all about how I don't like the queen everybody ^^^^

Can't see anything wrong with it, since the tower doesn't even have a name at the moment.
go nuts, it will always be known as big ben and nothing but.

If they want to rename it after every monarch to have a diamond jubilee (Which I'm assuming given that it's currently the Victoria Tower) why not just name it the Diamond Tower or something?

They should name it Big Beth, that way everyone wins.
Forgive me if I'm just being an uneducated foreigner, but doesn't the queen just sit around, wave, and spend money? I mean she doesn't actually do anything does she?

She's sort of like Paris Hilton, where people care about her even though she isn't really important to anything. She's famous by the grace of her birth, and nothing else.
don't MP's have anything better to do than honour the oligarchy? Oh wait...

She makes the UK money because whilst the taxpayer does give her money she lets the government collect the money from her estates, and AFAIK that is about 200 million. Also, she gets us quite a few business deals amd attracts a lot of tourism

Plus she also does diplomatic work as well with her being head of state. [editline]2nd June 2012[/editline]
She actually does more than that.
