More than a million litres of wine was drained from tanks at a Riverland winery earlier this week, sparking a plea for help from the public. Police believe the property damage occurred at the Monash winery in South Australia some time between 3:00pm on December 28 and 9:00am the following morning. About 1.2 million litres of wine was drained from four separate tanks. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-30/vandals-cost-riverland-winery-1m-litres-of-wine/7059770
IT is enough to make a wine lover cry — 1.2 million litres of South Australian red down the drain. The deliberate discharge from four storage tanks at the Riverland Vintners property at Monash is now being investigated by police. Pools of the lost drop remained at the front of the Nixon Rd property on Wednesday, with a distinct stench of fermented grapes filling the 38C air. A red stain line could be seen where the pools of wine stretched along the road. Police say that, sometime between 3pm on Monday and 9am on Tuesday, someone entered Riverland Vintners and drained 1.2 million litres of wine from four separate tanks.
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/police-investigate-deliberate-draining-of-12-million-litres-of-wine-from-winery-at-monash-in-sas-riverland/news-story/603fcaa8f8a7199427a136800dbb92f4 You have to be a real dick to do that. What a fucking waste, why go and do something like that just for shits and giggles? Hundreds of thousands of $ poured down the drain for no reason.
How much would that cost.
How much would that cost.
Difficult to say. SA wine is renowned internationally but we do also make shitty wine. Given it's a red it's probably at least A$10/bottle. Depending on tax it would be in the tens of millions in losses. [editline]30th December 2015[/editline] Well, unless it's goon.
What a fucking waste, why go and do something like that just for shits and giggles? Hundreds of thousands of $ poured down the drain for no reason.
Because it's fun as long as nobody finds out it was you.
Seriously, what a waste. How bored can you be to do such a thing? (User was banned for this post ("Reaction image" - postal))

I'm thinking 1.2 million litres is gonna be a hell of a lot more. Can't imagine how badly it's gonna end up destabilizing that winery. [editline]30th December 2015[/editline] You'd think that these huge storage tanks would have at least some security measure to prevent someone from just opening it up and letting it run.
Piece of shit deserves to work and pay off every single ounce.
What a fucking waste, why go and do something like that just for shits and giggles? Hundreds of thousands of $ poured down the drain for no reason.
I'm guessing probably prohibitionists. property damage on this scale is very rarely just done "for the lulz"
I'm guessing probably prohibitionists. property damage on this scale is very rarely just done "for the lulz"
You don't understand what vandals are, do you?
You don't understand what vandals are, do you?
You don't understand that there are several sizeable groups of people that have an axe to grind with the booze industry, do you?
You don't understand that there are several sizeable groups of people that have an axe to grind with the booze industry, do you?
There hasn't been a prohibition movement in Australia since the 50s. [editline]31st December 2015[/editline] Occam's razor. Vandals are far more likely.
Could be a religious motive for vandalising? Like any normal vandal I just can't see draining it instead of grabbing a load
What a fucking waste, why go and do something like that just for shits and giggles? Hundreds of thousands of $ poured down the drain for no reason.
Worth millions in market value.
Could be a religious motive for vandalising? Like any normal vandal I just can't see draining it instead of grabbing a load
Seems unlikely. If someone was doing it to send a religious message they'd have left something somewhere about it. What's the point in vandalising a winery in the name of your religion of nobody knows that's why you did it? What a waste of perfectly usable alcohol. The vandals better have bottled some of that shit before bailing. It'll likely be the last drink they have for a while.
Similar situation happened on a farm near where I live, on Christmas Eve. Vandals opened up and drained hundreds of gallons of milk out of two tanks onto the storage floor, which in turn went through the drain that was installed in the same room. The family likely lost a whole month's profit. The reason? Not even they know, but as a result they're installing locks on that door to the building.
Does insurance cover crimes like this?
Does insurance cover crimes like this?
Hopefully they have insurance and or they catch the people responsible
Does insurance cover crimes like this?
Yeah. They're definitely insured, as to whether the claim they make will specifically be considered valid, who knows. This is vandalism, and they're a business, they'll have insurance if they have a brain amongst them.
Pools of the lost drop remained at the front of the Nixon Rd property on Wednesday, with a distinct stench of fermented grapes filling the 38C air. A red stain line could be seen where the pools of wine stretched along the road.
Absolutely brutal.
Wow, those Vandals sure get around. First they sack Rome and ruin their wine, now they're in Australia.
Could be a religious motive for vandalising? Like any normal vandal I just can't see draining it instead of grabbing a load
Thats some pretty strange Islamic extremism.
Could be a religious motive for vandalising? Like any normal vandal I just can't see draining it instead of grabbing a load
The Jehovah's Witnesses are finally fighting back
Maybe it was a competitor? But most likely some vandal.

Seems weird that you'd have a container storing tens of millions of dollars in liquid, and not have the area locked down or an alarm that goes off if the pressure starts dropping (indicating leak or drainage).
