• Bans for language in online game servers? SERIOUSLY?

The following is an opinion thread. Okay, I'm sorry. If the game says, "RATED M FOR MATURE", and you're 10 years old, you shouldn't have it. If you do I don't have an issue, but when it affects my gameplay, I do. Banning swearing in servers that are 17+ is just plain out idotic. I hate getting banned for saying, "Hey bitches." because I am quite often, that or I get yelled at for using 'innappropriate language' when I really did nothing wrong. The game says, "RATED M". Fellow server owners, I'd like you to get together and stop pointless banning. Even when the game is rated T or 13+, in PG-13 movies, they can say 'fuck' (though use is limited). Well my rant is over, what do you think? Should there be Language banning in online servers? State your reasoning and support it with logical facts.
server admins can do whatever they want, not saying it's sensible though. Little kids shouldn't play M rated games.
I don't think it's really because of the rating. Excessive swearing is tasteless at any age. Actually, I'd say more tasteless when you're older.
Also, if your parents let you watch the latest SAW movie, they'll typically have no issues with you playing Counter Strike... server owners in my eyes need to realize that. (Kind of a bad comparason, but you get the point, right?) Edit: Really? I always get banned because of the 'younger players'.
It's even better when playing something like BC2, with a built-in filter. I joined a server once, and it had it turned off. I said "damn", and after 2 minutes an admin permabanned me. I was both enraged and laughing like a madman
It's especially ridiculous in games where the characters in the game even swear. Like TF2.
eGO
Who cares, nobody wants to hear or see your 13 year old mouth running off swears 24/7 anyway
Stay on topic. And Itresting, I didn't know TF2's character's swore, must not be too bad, but reguarless, it's a good arguement.
....eGO.... Oh.. Ninjas.
I remember in the beta of BC2 the swear filter would filter out osama.
I hear a lot younger people swear more than me. And I concur with yout point. 17+ should be allowed to use that kind of language.
I agree. 17+ games deserve 17+ players.

Pffft, if we all agree, why don't we change it? Oh wait, kids are probably sleeping at this late hour. (9:20 PM)
I think it's kinda dumb and unrealistic when you guys say that 17+ games should only have 17+ games. I mean really, you never played a game underage? But I do understand the point about it affecting game play, that's dumb. But yeah, it's kinda ridiculous if they ban you after one cuss word, but it is obnoxious if you are constantly swearing.
eGO
Don't get me started.
eGO
Got permad from a TF2 server for saying "Bloody Hell medic. Heal me please."
I got banned from all eGO servers for messing with a teleporter in one of their TF2 servers and saying "dammit" a lot while playing engineer. The thing with eGO servers and their elitist prick admins is that they claim to be at the whim of their sponsors who they advertise for in game. Apparently servers that allow people to run around screaming "fuck" at each other are bad for business. Once that ban was lifted I came back and sprayed pornography EVERYWHERE, it was a good day.
I got perma'd from a CS server because my friend went on my mic and called people "crazy" in chinese. When they started votebanning, one guy asked why and friend said "ban your mother la" with a strong chinese accent. That was hardly swearing FFS. I'm glad I was banned anyway. No offence, but it was full of anti-social chinese faggots, quite literally, so I'm pretty ok with it.
It's especially ridiculous in games where the characters in the game even swear. Like TF2.
Or Bad Company 2. The fact that EA put in a swear filter in that game simply baffles me.
I see your point, OP. But really now, let's be serious.
I don't think it's really because of the rating. Excessive swearing is tasteless at any age. Actually, I'd say more tasteless when you're older.
I agree with shatteredwindow's point. Swearing is just an infantile and immature way of expressing oneself. Instead of getting pissed, get it into your head that nobody likes needless profanity - especially not past the age of 15. Entering a server and immediately greeting people with "hey bitches" is a messed up way of communication and exhibits poor socialization skills. Maybe you should treat these bans as a way to shape up and learn some real-life communication skills, seeing as your parents clearly failed at that point. [editline]5th May 2011[/editline]
I agree. 17+ games deserve 17+ players.
17+ players should be mature. Not babies running their mouths and acting "rebellious". Grow up!
If I to get banned for some specific rule on the server I always get warned. It's their server, they payed for it and they can do whatever they want on them. If I don't like it I leave, if I can live with it I stop doing that thing and continue playing happily.
Fucking edgegamers are awful, some 12 year old kid with a shit mic was screaming and I told him to shut up,I was the one that was kicked...
Fucking edgegamers are awful, some 12 year old kid with a shit mic was screaming and I told him to shut up,I was the one that was kicked...
I'd be just as happy that I didn't have to play on a shit server like that then. I'd probably leave either way.
The group I'm an admin at is pretty cool, really lax with the only language-type rule barring racism. Although we do have a few members that are 12 or so that scream profanities so it's quite annoying at times, but since micspamming is also disallowed they can be muted. Quite nice, really.
I dislike swearing in voice chat, mostly when people are spurting it out every time they die or kill someone. I don't really care for voice chat though , i don't use it, and i always mute all other players. But still, unless it's being spammed constantly, it shouldn't be banable, if a player's annoying, mute them
It's stupid. It's just so the admins can feel that their useful for something, so they can grow their own e-penis and feel important and powerful, because nothing else ban-worthy normally ever happens (also known as the FP-Mod-syndrome). Come on!! It's a game where you blow each other's brains out with a smorgasbord of weaponry. You're not allowed to swear? This isn't sunday picnic with the church...
I'd be just as happy that I didn't have to play on a shit server like that then. I'd probably leave either way.
I used to be in eGo, I lasted 4 months before I left.
Cuz swearing is SOOOOOOO mainstream.
