Nikki Finke Rages That ‘Star Wars’ Characters Were On ‘Extreme Makeover’ Last Night, Everyone Points

I don't watch Extreme Home Makeover, because I cry really, really easily and I never have enough tissues to handle the end when a family in need gets a house they deserve. But it's a shame I missed this past Sunday's episode, because apparently the Star Wars-loving cosplayers of the Central Texas 501st Legion, also known as Vader's Fist, stopped by to help a female firefighter whose Star Wars-loving family had ironically lost their home in a wildfire.
That's not the news. This is the news - courtesy of Nikki Finke at Deadline.com:
"I just saw the opening two minutes and they had Darth Vader and his Storm Troopers helping build a new house!" one Star Wars fanboy complained to me. "This is disgusting and it's exactly what people were afraid of with Disney buying Star Wars. They are ruining the franchise by using it for trivial bullshit. Please write about this. It's outrageous and it's totally wrong."
Here is the news: NIKKI FINKE KNOWS THE WORST STAR WARS FAN IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. Maybe the worst person in the world; certainly he/she's in the running. Honestly, I refuse to believe this person actually exists. In all my days as a professional nerd, I can't even imagine the most hardcore of Star Wars fans getting upset — or really, being anything other than happy or proud — that a cosplayer helped cheer up a family of Star Wars fans on a TV show.
The incivility — hell, the actual evil necessary to mentally put the Star Wars franchise ahead of the basic welfare of other human beings seems astonishingly impossible. Not just in the sense that only a psychopath would think a fan helping people somehow denigrates the Star Wars franchise - but because the Star Wars franchise has denigrated itself so far past an Extreme Home Makeover tie-in that it probably doesn't even crack the top 100.
Has this person never gone to a Star Wars weekend and seen professional actors paid to dress like Darth Vader and dance to MC Hammer? Do they not realize this has been happening for years, well before Disney bought Lucasfilm? Have they never seen the inexplicably abhorrent Star Wars Holiday Special, that Lucas himself approved? Did they see that VW commercial with the little kid dressed as Darth Vader? Have they not seen the actual, licensed Star Wars fishing rod? DID THEY NOT SEE JAR JAR? DO THEY REALLY THINK AN ACT OF TELEVISION CHARITY IS SOMEHOW ACTUALLY WORSE THAN SEEING JAR JAR STEP IN ONE OF THE ACTUAL GODDAMNED STAR WARS MOVIES?!
Look. I cannot truly imagine this person is real. I have to think that Finke asked someone, possibly at gun point, to give her some terrible quote in order to make up a story about Star Wars fans being upset Disney bought the franchise, because must of us are actually pretty pleased. But if this person is real, congratufuckinglations, sir or madam, because you are the the most terrible goddamned nerd in the entire world. And congratulations to Nikki Finke for managing to get his/her quote for her article.
What a douche.
Who gives a shit if the 501st got invited to volunteer.
What a bitch.
Well fuck you very much Nikki Finke.
Bitch =/
Hey I know a guy whose part of that 501st group.
Most of those people are weird, they have like autism and stuff
snip
I caught that episode somehow
I think the only thing I felt nerdrage about was the fact there were clone troops alongside the imperial troopers and vader, and that somebody superimposed robot voices on top of them when they talked. I don't understand how on earth anyone can mess thta up so badly
also that one greenscreen thing where the kids danced next to a badly mocapped C3PO doing an irish jig for no reason

They are all a part of the 501. Also they have a Sand People division, and a Mandarorian Division.

it's that they're different time period armors. The remaining clones ended up wearing imperial armor as the military evolved, no?
I can't blame them for being short on people to all be matching, but it was still a bit annoying when they all filed in like that
lole the link for the original article has a 10 second full-screen ad page then the actual article
who gives a shit about nikki finke
The 501st: they are more than your average stormtroopers

The 501st was active during the Clone Wars. A good chunk of the episodes focus on them. Also, the armor wasn't instantly replaced, but phased out. A good example of this would be in the Bobba Fett is Dead story arc where the armor is shown side by side. I can see if I can find some scans later from the comic.
can we please add no more gawker media to sh rules
????
thanks
[editline]4th December 2012[/editline]
oh wait this wasn't gawker being dumb
just gawker saying hey look how stupid this person is, by giving them views
-snip-
It's news that someone's friend got a bit upset at a TV show?

Read the Deadline article, she agrees with it.
So lets get this straight. An upset Star Wars fanboy cried about the guys form the 501st Legion came to help out on Extreme Home Makeover? Jesus, what a baby.

he assumed it was disney just randomly whoring characters out in order to cash in on their new purchase
honestly it crossed my mind but I realized it probably wasn't because the show isn't affiliated with disney. They'd have sent the kids to disneyland to hang out with characters in the park, not sent them to skywalker ranch
iirc these are filmed way in advance
disney probably didn't own it yet
Hey, a Sandtrooper friend of mine was in on this!
And wait, don't the 501st do charity things like this anyway?

It's an ABC show, and they're owned by Disney. From the few episodes I've seen, they send people to Disney's parks a lot.

Yeah pretty much they go to things like music festivals, video game cons, anime cons, and other public events of the like.

Ya. I've seen the 501st a few times. Once was at a Star Wars Concert near my home, and the other was in a town down south where they participated in the Halloween parade there. I still am thinking of joining them, for one of getting a hobby besides gaming, and two of doing something useful for once with all these charities they do.
The 501st really is a great organization.
The rebel cosplayers do the same thing but who wants to join the rebels
the whole concept that "disney sent the 501st to build a house" is ridiculous considering the 501st is a completely independent fan organization
lucasfilm can ask them to do things, but whether they actually do it or not is completely their choice

no nikki,
pls no
no nikki,
pls no
Oh, haven't you heard? Nerding is a growing and lucrative business where you do jack all but spout on the internet about how "nerdy" you are.
Fuck this chick. Good on them for helping out people in need.
no nikki,
pls no
That's not Nikki it's the io9 writer.
Weren't they already on that show? At the very least I remember something about them helping build a star wars themed clubhouse for some kid.
