EU: English Channel? More like 'The Anglo-French Pond'
42 replies, posted
Without it there would be no British Isles, no White Cliffs of Dover and Captain Matthew Webb would never have found fame as a nifty swimmer.
Yet the mighty English Channel's status could be reduced to that of a mere creek if Brussels has its way.
Officials want to rename it 'the Anglo-French Pond' as part of a plan to bolster the notion of an EU superstate.
More than £1million, much of it coming from the British taxpayer, is being spent drawing up a new map to be distributed to schools and bureaucrats.
Hey lets pay £1m to have the EU act like assholes towards us
Seriously is there any point in this at all? and to add insult to injury BRITISH taxpayers are paying for this ridiculous scheme. This sort of thing is why Britain needs to keep away from the EU in my opinion.

Fuck them EU bastards.
This seems dubious, any source from something more official, and not a heavily biased paper? Maybe, you know, an EU announcement?
How is it in any way a 'pond'?
 Brussels doing something against the UK?! Surely you jest I would've never have thought it possible!
That's almost half a percent of the money they spend on supporting the upkeeping of museums.

Don't let this happen to us
Quick google search shows no decent sources for this story.- http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=tLm&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&q=The+Anglo-French+Pond&meta=&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=
Sounds like a joke that the daily mail took seriously.
'bout bloody time we restarted the goddam British Empire, put those silly EU officials in their place when we rush Brussels with our elephant-mounted artillery and laser monocles.
'Now British taxpayers' money is being used literally to wipe our nation off the map, erase 1,000 years of history and downgrade the English Channel to the insulting status of a pond.
'A Conservative government will scrap these Euro plans and save the English Channel.'

Nope not biased at all

I lol'd at "Lé Pond"
I thought this sounded ridiculous and then I saw the source.
Daily Mail lol.

The Daily Mail's a tabloid.
Daily Mail lol.
Oh good, I was about to rant
How the fuck does frenchies care about that ?
We didn't even know it.
Brussels, brussels...
That's as stupid as renaming something like, say, the Sears Tower to something else.
(I know the article isn't true, just so you know.)
I googled "Anglo-French Pond". Other than the Daily Mail post and one on the Daily Express (which actually refrained from talking about Princess Diana), it was mentioned in a couple of forums but that's it. I've yet to see information about it in an official press release or any newspaper article that doesn't use the phrase "barking mad Eurocrats". Clearly this is a Middle Englander trying to rile up other Middle Englanders - it's very clearly not a pond.
That all being said, I do think the EU tends to go for referring to the English Channel by the French name, la manche, which literally means "the sleeve" since it's sleeve shaped, and the name is less politicised.
rawr i h9ate the EU
i say we pull out of the eu and go bakk to a pure brtiain

Pretty much that. Some seem to think Britain is still an almighty empire.
It's some april fool joke.
it's absolutely true because I read it in the daily mail
The daily mail is not a vaild source on anything to do with European affairs, American politics, Immigration, Immigrants, the Labour Government, the Conservative party, International Affairs, Social Issues, "Hoodies", Taxes, Muslims, Seeks, Catholics, any ethnic or religous minority, the French, Germans, Irish, Diana or any member of the Royal family, Swine Flu, Bird Flu, Global Warming, the Boogie man, Santa or really anything else.
Basically it's a version of the Onion that has gotten WAY out of hand.
daily mail and no other reputable source?
move along gentlemen.

I guess we english don't want any frogs in our pond.

:golfclap:
Why do British people get so touché when it comes to nationalism?
Unbelievable. No, really. I do not believe this, and the fact that it's from the Daily Mail doesn't at all help
It's just an attempt to bolster anti-EU sentiment, which unfortunately is probably going to work
Why do British people get so touché when it comes to nationalism?
Because apparently a country consisting of European immigrants is something you should be proud of.
I think it has some significance with the Romans who enslaved us a long time ago.

Every country has immigrants, don't feel special.
