Some of the most unique advances in Valve's single-player games were discovered by the outside-the-box interpretation of simple heuristics — how players were immersed in Half-Life 1 because bullets left a permanent mark on the environment, or how Half-Life 2's characters were considered to be more relatable, simply because they were able to make eye contact with the player. That kind of innovation, Newell said, becomes much more difficult when additional players are added to the mix. "Single-player games are like a feature film where your lead actor is retarded and autistic, but you can think of it like a feature film," Newell said. "In a multiplayer game, these rules that you come up with don't work anymore. An example would be in Counter-Strike, we put the riot shield in, and our player number go up. We take the riot shield out, and our player numbers go ... up. How do you explain that? "You start to think, after a while, that multiplayer games are all about externalities. They kind of look more like operating systems, or a sport. In terms of how they behave, they behave a lot more, and value is created a lot more like a spectator sport than a feature film."
Holy shit Gabe That's abit far
Gordon Freeman is retarded and autistic?
Gordon Freeman is retarded and autistic?
Explains a WHOLE lot.
there goes my questions about half-life goodbye long friends
So that's why Gabe likes MLP. But I think he goes a bit far. Unless he talks about Valve SP games.
Gordon Freeman is retarded and autistic?
But I thought we were supposed to identify with Gordon Freeman.
Heard him say this in the video, wondered when the shitstorm would commence.
You would expect better out of someone like him.
Maybe not the best choice of words.
Um, I demand video before I believe Gabe said this.
I don't think he's implying that the player is retarded and autistic, but that the character your playing as is, with the way he interacts with the environments.
That isn't 'too far' at all - That's how you consider users for any program, they're going to explore every inch of your program and if there is a way to break it, they'll probably find it in a place that you never considered.
-snip-
Gabe has spoken
I don't think he's implying that the player is retarded and autistic, but that the character your playing as is, with the way he interacts with the environments.
and that everyone you interact with in the game treats you like a child unless your very far in the game
He actually has a lot of interesting stuff to say in that article (especially regarding the tf2 economy, even if some of it has been said before) But ya, that line at face value seems really... weird?
Gordon Freeman is retarded and autistic?
aspergers, he can't talk to women
So, he's saying that the main character is a retard...but we as players give them character, but not in multiplayer. Makes some form of sense.
Holy shit Gabe That's abit far
I don't think it is. He is talking about the main character reacting with the world, as in from an ingame perspective. He means how you interact with the world, where you've got a main character with a very limited skillset relative to a normal person due to limitations of programming interactivity. You have something with a phD (Gordon) but his only interaction involves pulling a few levers or buttons, shooting people and driving. If you think of him as if he were an actual person, what Gabe says is how Gordon seems.

I believe he means the player of said game. Not the main character, and I believe him.
He probably means how, every time you play Half-Life 2, you always mess with stuff even if you're not supposed to. You're bound to throw the can at the Metrocop, even if it's in your best interests not to. You're going to trash Kleiner's lab even though he's an old friend. Behaving in real life like you do in Half-Life would make you look like an idiot. Still not the best choice of words. I'm personally not offended by them, but I'm sure there are plenty who are.
I don't think it is. He is talking about the main character reacting with the world, as in from an ingame perspective. He means how you interact with the world, where you've got a main character with a very limited skillset relative to a normal person due to limitations of programming interactivity. You have something with a phD (Gordan) but his only interaction involves pulling a few levers or buttons, shooting people and driving. If you think of him as if he were an actual person, what Gabe says is how Gordon seems.
Exactly, people shouldn't get mad over this. Gabe says a lot of things and there are bound to be some that are not worded in the optimal way. And he's right.
Don't think I've ever heard Gabe say "retarded" or "autistic" before :v:
well a character who is controlled by the player in a game really does behave like... well a retard in context with the game. Think about being an NPC watching a player try and find a secret in a game like dishonoured or running around looking at textures and exploring things. You don't look normal in that regard. i doubt that's what he means but I kind of get it.
Can someone explain what he's "taking too far", the fact that he's using the word "retarded" and "autistic" to describe a character in a game?
It probably also refers to how the main character has a SUPER IMPORTANT JOB TO DO whilst the players agenda usually concerns exploring every inch of the playable world for any tiny hidden thing
Like in hl2 when you're in an elevator with alyx whose introducing herself, Gordon fucking freeman just stands there and decides to not even talk to her Come on Gordon get it together

It's nothing really to get worked up about, though because he'll apologize in a few days and everything will be well. Just a little misstep.
