Hi, My GTX 280 keeps crashing and BFG went out of business so i cant return it. I have put it in the oven before, and that fixed the problem for a while. I thought that the problem was heat, so i cranked the fan up to 60% during gaming and that worked for a few days. But now, it just crashes no matter what. Its either heat, I have to put it in the oven again, or i was thinking that the power supply might not be able to handle my system. I have a phenom II 955 BE, GTX 280, spinpoint f3, samsung ssd (just put that in today...doesnt seem to have changed anything really), asus M4A785TD-v EVO. Do you think its the power supply or do i just need to oven it again? If the oven doesnt work, whats a good card to upgrade to? I was thinking 6850/6870. Thanks
It would be helpful if you told us the wattage/model of your PSU
using an oven to bring your card back from the dead i personally haven't ever done but i think its just a short term solution. if their truly is a problem with the card you might just have to buy a new one.
How do you know it's the card? In what way does it crash? A whole system lock up?
700W PSU, OCZ. And it looks like this(sometimes the colors vary): http://media.photobucket.com/image/gtx%20280%20crash/geppwnd/IMG_2000.jpg Im almost positive its the card. It never did this before i got it, and this is the problem my friend who i got it from was having.
Sounds like it's the card alright. I'd suggest reinstalling the heatsink on the card with new thermal compound. Although if it was a problem since before you got it, it's likely the damage is done. The 6850 would be a pretty big step up from the benchmarks I've seen.
Yeah. Even if i put it in the oven again, it would only be a temporary fix. Which card should i get? 5850: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150499&cm_re=5850-_-14-150-499-_-Product 6850:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150512&cm_re=6850-_-14-150-512-_-Product 6870:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150507&cm_re=6870-_-14-150-507-_-Product 5870:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150476&cm_re=5870-_-14-150-476-_-Product Cheaper the better. Would there be a noticeable difference between the cards? I usually play l4d2, tf2, source games, ect. I want to get the 5850 but if the other cards are worth it then i would consider them...
Any artifacts coming up on the screen?
or if anyone has a Nvidia suggestion, im all for it. Not a fanboy... [editline]25th December 2010[/editline] No. Just when i enter a game it crashes. Although, this morning, after the windows welcome screen, it crashed with a black screen with little red lines all over it. There are no random artifacts though.
I'd suggest a GTX 460, or a 560 if you can wait for it.
When is the 560 coming out? I sort of need the card now. IS the 5850 BE i mentioned above an all around solid card? Is there one better for about the same price?
gtx470 is better [editline]25th December 2010[/editline] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130550&cm_re=gtx470-_-14-130-550-_-Product
gtx470 is better
Wow, really? I never would have guessed... It also costs more, and he said cheaper is better. GTX 460 is the best bang for the buck you can get right now, at least until the GTX 560 comes out.
gtx470 is better
yes, it's better, but it certainly costs quite a bit more than the 5850
Is it worth the extra $50? (after all mail in rebates for both cards). Doesnt it run much hotter too? If i got the 5850, Can i use a single 6 pin from my PSU and an 8 pin to 6 pin cable for the two 6 pin plugs on the gfx card? Or do they both need to be 6 pins?
to tell the truth if I had $250 to spend on a GPU I would get a 6870 how about this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161349&cm_re=6870-_-14-161-349-_-Product
looks great buy it
Shit Jaehead, you arent making this any easier. Alright. 6870 VS. 5850 BE VS 470. Best Price/Performance? I really wanted xfx's double lifetime warranty...
in terms of pure performance the 5850 is the weakest the 470 and the 6870 are similar, so if you were to go for either of those I would get the cheaper one
All of the comparisons ive seen say that the 6870 is better than the 470. So, I guess ill go with the 6870. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150506&cm_re=6870-_-14-150-506-_-Product VS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150507 (I know, Im an XFX whore). Is the black edition worth the extra money? Does it have the double lifetime warranty? Thanks
no, factory OC'd cards are never worth the money. and yes, it still has lifetime warranty as long as you register it.
xfx is for fags buy powercolor powercolor master race
nothing wrong with xfx what are you on
I decided to give my gtx 280 one last go, so i stuck it in the oven. its in right now, ill be letting it cool/assembling it tonight, ill tell you guys how it goes. P.S. Integrated graphics blow.
