Having already broken sales records in the first 24 hours following its release, Watch Dogs is now the company’s best-selling game ever in week one**. *based on NPD and GFK data and internal estimates as of June 3, 2014 ** based upon internal estimates for Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs worldwide sales data for all platforms as of June 3, 2014 Source: https://www.ubisoftgroup.com/en-US/press/detail.aspx?cid=tcm:99-146238-16&ctid=tcm:95-27313-32
Suddenly the goal of 6.2 million units doesn't seem so far fetched.
Too bad it was a buggy as fuck mess of a release. First impressions are everything.
Too bad it was a buggy as fuck mess of a release.
Whatever you think of the actual game, you have to admit that the marketing department did its job.
its the assasins creed 1 of the series bunch of good ideas, some stuff in the game is bugged to hell, some bad ideas. the second game might be similar to assassins creed 2. A bunch of amazing streamlined ideas that make a amazing game.
Direct proof that the gaming scene will throw ridiculous amount of money at a literal sack of shit if it gets enough sugarcoating.
Whatever you think of the actual game, you have to admit that the marketing department did its job.
Yeah they did a wonderful job, especially with the E3 demo.
Direct proof that the gaming scene will throw ridiculous amount of money at a literal sack of shit if it gets enough sugarcoating.
Not specific to gaming look at Transformers. Spend enough money on it, generate enough buzz and it will sell.
Not specific to gaming look at Transformers. Spend enough money on it, generate enough buzz and it will sell.
This is why we can't have nice things anymore, tho. This just proves to the executives and managers that the budget should go mainly into marketing and the development should focus on: a) Going with themes that "fly" at the time. Don't try new things, don't experiment. Everyone has a cellphone and an alternate universe where SOMEBODY is able to read all their dirty sexts and explode their phone is SPOOKY and THRILLING and people can RELATE. b) Putting maximal effort into blingy graphics, catchphrase-compressible features, stuff that looks cool in 2 second teaser cuts. Reviewers are bad at games so difficulty and balancing doesn't matter, gameplay doesn't matter, and they are easy to distract and definitely too lazy to go through the entire game so the amount of actual content doesn't matter either. c) The money should go into advertising first, development last. Get more pre-rendered teasers, pay for more exclusive reviews, embargo everything so nobody gets to speak their mind before the pre-orders are in. The entire effort is focused into making a neat marketing packaging for content the quality of which doesn't matter whatsoever, opinions of customers don't matter if most of your customers will pay you without really knowing what's your product really like.

The sales come from the years-long hypetrain, not the quality of the product itself. Also, is there anything else in the market it's competing with right now? Definitely not on PC. It got released into a market with nothing else to be excited about at this point in time.
Did those 4 million people even look at the E3 trailer compared to what it is now? Basically downgraded it.
Did those 4 million people even look at the E3 trailer compared to what it is now? Basically downgraded it.
Did you look at any media released over the past year? It looks exactly as it's been marketed. 2 year old E3 demos are not an accurate representation of final products, and the game looks damn close. People need to look at it from a logical perspective. Perhaps Watch Dogs was intended to look like that, but they sacrificed those extra effects for stability.
Direct proof that the gaming scene will throw ridiculous amount of money at a literal sack of shit if it gets enough sugarcoating.
You haven't actually played the game have you? It's not perfect, but it's a fun game.
90% of the people I've seen giving really detailed criticisms of watch dogs haven't played it and yeah, it's a damned fun game that still looks absolutely amazing.
90% of the people I've seen giving really detailed criticisms of watch dogs haven't played it and yeah, it's a damned fun game that still looks absolutely amazing.
the only complaint i have really is the PC framerate skips that happen. once they fix that im 100% happy with the game.
Watch Dogs was supposed to be the "GTA V killer" Imo it's nothing more than just another blockbuster game.
Direct proof that the gaming scene will throw ridiculous amount of money at a literal sack of shit if it gets enough sugarcoating.
You say that in every thread connected with Watch_Dogs. We get it.
Watch Dogs was supposed to be the "GTA V killer" Imo it's nothing more than just another blockbuster game.
Who claimed this to be the GTA V killer?

Ouch. So much for that eh? I'm still getting a good kick out of the game though. 30 hours in and not tired of it yet. Kinda tied my craving for a new open world game until GTA V comes out on PC.
Watch Dogs was supposed to be the "GTA V killer" Imo it's nothing more than just another blockbuster game.
Well for me it's a lot better than GTA 5 because I can't even fucking play it since it's not on PC. And it's still a great game on its own, I don't understand why do people keep shitting on it
The power of advertisement everyone...

In what world was it ready to come out back then? The driving is really mediocre, and physics are super buggy, and the shooting/weapon system seems really... eh? It's fun, yeah, but it feels like a sum of a million average pieces that makes it not really stand out at all.
This is where the industry is headed folks. I believe in time it might just completely collapse on itself.
I think the multiplayer is honestly the most fun I've had in a while. It is really suspenseful when you are hacking someone and they walk right in front of you at 98%
It's not a bad game, it's just meh. People seem to forget that you can still have fun with a game, even if it's jusy mediocre or mediocre to good.

That's hardly a claim of being the GTA V killer. That's just clever marketing.
personally, as a gamer, there is nothing i love more than the term "intellectual property." i love IPs, franchises, merchandising rights, sequels, prequels, reboots. if EA games showed me a game where i can do lots of cool shit like zipline around and drive tanks through buildings and maybe fight gunbattles in space like in that movie Gravity, id be like "ehh" but then if they told me that the game is going to be called Battlefield: Re-Evolutions and, in addition to the 60 dollars for the game, i could also pay another 60 dollars for a secret map pack, two (2) new tank skins, and a Sierra Mist: Get into the Game™ T-Shirt I'd be all like: sign me up I'll take five. I'm glad ubisoft knows what I want: more yearly franchises
I played through the campaign, twice. The story was only really there to keep the gameplay flowing, but it succeeded in tying the game together. The performance was dogshit insane, and every programmer behind the project, along with their bosses, should be flown to North Korea, and made examples of. The driving has a lot of unnecessary bullshit that makes it hard to use before you learn the system properly (RWD cars are useless). The PC version uses Ubisoft's own matchmaking system for online play, which simply doesn't fucking work properly, resulting in long queue times, whilst players on the console versions don't have to wait much at all. The Online Decryption gamemode has a Free-For-All and Team modes, all in one single fucking queue, and the FFA mode sucks, but because the matchmaking sucks, anyone that wants to try and play the Team gamemode, will have to basically bring 4-5 friends along with him in order to get it to work. The cover system is absolutely fucking ass, and will completely randomly change the place where pressing the cover button will take you, which will often end up getting you killed in the Online Hacking gamemode. I think I might be able to come up with a few more things I didn't like, but at the end of the day, the gameplay was actually pretty solid, and I hope they make a sequel after they've lynched their upper management and learnt to program.
