It's been almost a year now since Oculus announced that the consumer version of the Rift virtual reality headset would only support Windows PCs at launch—a turnaround from development kits that worked fine on Mac and Linux boxes. Now, according to Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey, it "is up to Apple" to change that state of affairs. Specifically, "if they ever release a good computer, we will do it," he told Shacknews recently.
Basically, Luckey continued, even the highest-end Mac you can buy would not provide an enjoyable experience on the final Rift hardware, which is significantly more powerful than early development kits. "It just boils down to the fact that Apple doesn’t prioritize high-end GPUs," he said. "You can buy a $6,000 Mac Pro with the top-of-the-line AMD FirePro D700, and it still doesn’t match our recommended specs."
Fucking savage
:godzing:
I could get a 27-inch iMac for the same price as the desktop computer I have now, yet it would have half the overall performance. That should say something.

Where's the excuse for not supporting Linux though?

"Who the fuck uses Linux"
fucking REKT
"Who the fuck uses Linux"
I'd wager this is actually the reason though, why commit resources to another OS if so little people use it
I don't like the Microsoft monopoly for serious computing more than anyone else but it is what it is

I'm pretty sure it's the actual reason too.
Less and less people use Linux for gaming with each year.
I don't think this will stop people from buying rift's though. There are going to be people with more money than brains buying these to use with their macbook pro because it's the hot new thing only to shit on it because it doesn't work

looks guys i found one
Where's the excuse for not supporting Linux though?
Afaik they'll get around to it eventually, they were supporting both linux and mac OSX at first but then stopped.
If you're up for waiting the vive will probably support it.
More like who the fuck uses Linux that doesn't dual boot. Using Linux as your only OS is dumb as hell.
You can do some shit if you've got supported hardware that'll make playing games in a VM run at basically native speeds, so not quite.
And if you only care about gaming occasionally it's great, the steam library is suprisingly populated.

We had a full suite of Mac systems at our college, I wound up using my £300 laptop instead and found it ran Blender at a faster/smoother rate.

He didn't say "good gaming computer" he said "good computer." Last I checked Macs were in fact designed to compute.
i.e., it's pretty fucking savage.

They're going to, but it'll take time.

afterwards he talks about how apple doesn't put gpus for games in their computers
so he actually means good gaming computers??? ??
afterwards he talks about how apple doesn't put gpus for games in their computers

this just in, GPU's used for more than games, more at 11
afterwards he talks about how apple doesn't put gpus for games in their computers

It's 2016, not 2006, GPUs are really fucking useful now.
Well of course. I know people who use their macs for gaming but honestly, if you're really serious about PC gaming and playing the most demanding games, you're on windows.
afterwards he talks about how apple doesn't put gpus for games in their computers

if I recall correctly, the macs with good GPUs have GPUs like the firepro, which are more for getting actual work done such as rendering movies (they're powerful, but don't have drivers for games). I mean, imacs(small ones) just have intels for their graphics, mac pros have firepros, and forget about oculus rift on laptop GPUs. So yeah, probably.
i don't think i've posted anything saying that gpus are only meant for games

You kinda hinted at it.
More like who the fuck uses Linux that doesn't dual boot. Using Linux as your only OS is dumb as hell.
How so? Ignorant thing to say. I use only linux on my office computer and my (non gaming) living room computer with no complaints.

The smaller iMacs use Intel, the 27 inch models use (mobile) AMD R9 GPUs.
The smaller iMacs use Intel, the 27 inch models use (mobile) AMD R9 GPUs.
So yeah, basically useless for this purpose.
So yeah, basically useless for this purpose.
Pretty much. But saying iMacs only have Intel as a GPU option isn't true.
I'm pretty sure it's the actual reason too.

That's completely false, though. You literally just made that up. Still, I don't blame them for not outright supporting Linux; so long as most Triple A devs don't support Linux, they don't have any huge economically appealing reason to support Linux either.
I still keep Windows around on my home PC purely for playing games and using Autodesk products. Everything else I do on Linux.

Should have added for gaming. Just look at Steam Hardware Survey
