Kellyanne Conway, who was Trump's campaign manager in 2016, advocated for Republican Roy Moore in Alabama's recent Senate election during live television interviews broadcast from the White House lawn. The Office of Special Counsel found Conway violated the Hatch Act, which bars federal employees from using their office for partisan politics. OSC is an independent federal ethics agency that has no relationship with Department of Justice special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 election.
Didn't Trump also throw his support behind Moore? And a LOT of other people? What makes this different?
Didn't Trump also throw his support behind Moore? And a LOT of other people? What makes this different?
The difference is doing it as a private person, rather than as a public official. The President of the United States cannot endorse anyone. Mr. Donald Trump can endorse whoever he wants, as a private person, but the President cannot. So he can tweet about Moore or hold rallies or whatever, but he couldn't, for example, write an Executive Order that endorsed Moore. Similarly, the Counselor to the President cannot endorse anyone, but by doing so in a speech from the White House grounds during the course of her duties as Counselor, she broke the law.
So will any real actions be taken against her? The article mentions disciplinary actions from Trump, but we all know that's not going to happen.
