Gazprom has reaffirmed its Monday deadline for Ukraine to pay its debts after talks between Moscow and Kiev ended without agreement.
The Russian gas giant said it will cut Ukraine's supply if Kiev fails to pay $1.95bn (£1.15bn) by 06:00 GMT.
"We reached no agreement. The chances that we meet again are slim," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kuprianov said.
Ukraine's discounted rate for gas was axed in April after Moscow accused Kiev of failing to pays its bills.
Mr Kuprianov said Russia would switch to a pre-payment system if it did not receive the money, meaning Moscow could cut off gas supplies to Ukraine.
A shit situation for Ukraine, but completely fair.
-snip
This is completely fair, Ukraine won't take $385 a barrel for Russian gas, demand is high and that is $100.50 down from the current rate. The only reason Russia subsidized so much gas for Ukraine was because they were going to join the Customs Union. They broke their deal, so no more discounted gas. They havent paid for gas in a while anyways, and Russia has let it slip, but not anymore, anybody could have seen this coming.
The gas has been off for just over five minutes now.
At least it's summer so nobody will freeze to death, at least for now.
The gas is indeed off

Article mentions they've got gas reserves until December, so they're still using gas.
And now mass media will make this a crime against progressive humanity, also comparing Putin with Hitler.
I wouldn't be surprised if they will really make this.
If he was Hitler he'd be giving the gas for free
Oh man that's gas! I did Nazi that one coming for the 6th millionth time, but seriously guys you need to stop with all the Anti-Banker jokes there crude Anne Frankly i find them offensive.
Do you mean they're crude? there crude makes no sense
Imagine if you didn't pay your rent for 2 billion dollars.
Good thing it is summer.
The metro this morning said Ukraine was "siphoning" gas from the pipes to the rest of europe.
Of course British energy companies would use this as an excuse to put up prices again. (they don't get supplied from that line, but the north sea supply)

Operating since 1967, the “Brotherhood” is the largest consumer gas pipeline in Europe, clocking in at 4,451 km. It cuts through Ukraine and runs into Slovakia, where it diverges in two directions; with one part supplying gas to the Czech Republic, Germany, France and Switzerland, and the other to Austria, Italy, Hungary and several countries in the Balkans.
Whether the explosion affects gas supplies to Europe will be seen in the coming days, Russian gas giant Gazprom has said.
Also, official ukraine claims this is due to pipe's decompression but come on, only a month ago they prevented attemtp to blow it up in other portion of line. Guess this time they got a bit late.
P.S. guess a bit later they gonna blame Russia for blowing up the pipe soo South stream get boosted.
The news had a press conference with some Ukrainian official yesterday, who claimed this was obviously coincided and planned by Russia to further destabilize Ukraine. Basically claiming this is all part of the big plan. While I disagree with Russia on many things, this is ridiculous. The gas issue is not Russia's evil scheming. It's Ukraine not paying for it. I'm going to have to side with Russia on this one.

You don't have to side with either.
This is hopefully not the act of the Ukrainian government, probably some extremists trying to damage Russia's income as much as possible and stir up shit. Hopefully both sides will be mature about it.
edit: the Ukrainian government have nothing to gain in pissing off Russia and Europe at the same time. Their best bet is the keep popular support with the eurozone (which they won't get by denying them gas or stealing their gas) and defeat the "separatists".
