• Internet anonymity, do you really fear losing it?

Well, I've been thinking about this since the internets and other similar mediums of technology are intertwining with our lives at a quicker pace. Do you really fear losing anonymity on the internet anymore? Now, of course I'm not saying you shouldn't worry about giving away your address, zip code, Social Security number, etc. But just the general amount of now how you can join a live conversation on tinychat that's hosted by someone here and give away your image. Or you know the post pictures of yourself threads in fast threads. Or even when you play online games with a voice chat feature. Do you really fear now someone based on that info is going to come bump in the night anymore and rape you or something? With the internet, social networking and real life coming so close together nowadays, do you really fear anyone having the mentality of physically or otherwise harming you? I just thought this would be a good discussion topic, I will also post a poll with this.
I don't mind. A lot of people know who I am and other personal details.
I don't fear people actually finding me, because I don't usually give out pictures of myself or my specific address.
Not really; there's nothing to fear, and it's not like anyone cares.
Never put my last name or image on the internet. I'm paranoid about all that.
90% of facepunch consists of caucasian young adults anyways so it's no surprise for the most part
90% of facepunch consists of caucasian young adults anyways so it's no surprise for the most part
This is a very ironic poster.
Nope, already have lost that "anonymity"
I don't mind, I just don't want to find out some weirdo-fuckhead serial killer is/was after me and other random people.
I'm more worried about people I know from RL finding my E-persona, rather than some weirdo-fuckhead serial killer.
I wouldn't mind at all, really. I could see how some people would be scared about who lurks about the internet, but the chances of anything happening to you are very slim.
I wouldn't mind at all, really. It'd be nice if the people who voted yes stated a reason for doing so.
Or maybe they're even too afraid to post?
I don't have a problem with it personally, but then parents could try and crack down on 'cyberbullies', and we all know how big of a joke that is. I would rather it be private though.
It's a really gray area for me, on Facepunch I am fairly open to who I am where where I am, whereas on other sites (IE: 4chan) I would like to retain my anonymity.
Depends on how well I know a person. Quite a few of my close e-friends know my first and last name as well as where I live. Two of them even know my cell phone number.
I used to keep complete anonymity 2 years ago. Since then I've slowly phased out of that. Of course there are things about myself as to which I keep confidential (home address, telephone number...etc).
Voice, pictures that kind of stuff doesn't really matter to me.. Theres a point where I want to keep details hidden though.
Nope, because there are idiots these days who continually test the limits of Internet "anonymity." Eventually, the Internet will no longer be anonymous, which I personally believe is a good thing. What makes the Internet any different than other forms of communication?
I don't really care about being anonymous. If people start talking to me and ask me where I live or my name I'll tell them. Half the time I link them to my Facebook which has everything about me on it.
Reluctant as I am when it comes to posting personal info anyone who can use google could look at my post history and figure out my first and last name, address, phone number following a simple process of elimination. Thankfully most people lack the attention span to do that.
Not really, I used to be paranoid about that stuff, but now I don't care. There isn't much you can do with a picture of me, and my last name.
I really don't want the gov't to swoop in on my weird fetishes. No thanks.
uh yea, i dont want some sick freak coming to my house after i flamed him!

You can't kill internet anonymity All those white 15-25 year olds will find another way of hiding their identities
Not really, no one online has the reason or ability to seriously fuck with me in RL.
Yes I fear it. I cannot say why. Some things are best to keep private.
Yeah, I don't want people to know that I'm a forum user.
When you're finished with school and college and have to work for a living it may be a problem if your employers find out about your drunk nights with horses and goats and your habit of doing illegal drugs at the weekend. Especially if you have what's considered to be a responsible job like teaching, or being a medic.
