• Tesla goes plaid - Unveils "ludicrous speed" 0-60 in 2.8 seconds
In a press conference today, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk announced one that’s sure to get the attention of current and future Model S P85D owners — a “ludicrous speed upgrade” (thanks, Mel Brooks) that drops the 0-60 time 10 percent to a scant 2.8 seconds, and improves top speed to 155 miles per hour. Musk says that with this option, the Model S hits the quarter mile in a blistering 10.9 seconds, which would make it a few tenths of a second faster than the mighty 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat with drag racing tires. The upgrade is significant: It boosts the front electric motor from 221 to 259 hp and the rear from 470 to an astounding 503 hp. Musk said the new mode delivers 1.1Gs during acceleration and called it “faster than falling,” which we’d rather not test ourselves, at least with our own bodies. “It’s like having your own private roller coaster,” Musk said.

Aside from Ludicrous mode, Musk also added an upgraded 90kWh battery back option for $3,000 and lowered the price of the 70 KWh rear-wheel drive Model S to $70,000. Not only that, but Musk also said they’re going to bring back a new version of the Roadster in four years — the Roadster being their first model ever, and the one that really got people to sit up and take notice, as it delivered 4-second 0-60 times and 200 miles of range back when no other EV came close. No one still does, in fact, except for Tesla’s own products.
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/210238-tesla-motors-delivers-ludicrous-speed-upgrade-for-model-s-p85d He also mentioned Model 3 in 3 years, Model X "in a few months", and that they make changes to the Model S every week, essentially making always a new car. [editline]17th July 2015[/editline] They did it by inventing a new fuse.
It's too bad they don't make the Roadster anymore, I always did like how they looked. Only saw one in person.

The update puts it tied at 13th. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fastest_production_cars_by_acceleration Elon also said he expects battery range to increase by 5% each year. Which you can pay to upgrade to. Though he suggests not upgrading each year.
its a bit fuzzy i get that this is a paid upgrade, but is it a feature that you could add on later to a P90D if you wanted it?
Every time I hear news from tesla it's always giant leaps forward in technology. This guy is almost single handedly dragging the world kicking and screaming into the future.
You're kidding about the fuse part right? [editline]17th July 2015[/editline]
Every time I hear news from tesla it's always giant leaps forward in technology. I work with a guy who has the Tesla S. The lack of power curve is just weird to me. I'd never own an electric car though.
its a bit fuzzy i get that this is a paid upgrade, but is it a feature that you could add on later to a P90D if you wanted it?
P90D will come with it I believe. P90D is entirely new. All current owners can upgrade.
You're kidding about the fuse part right? [editline]17th July 2015[/editline] And people still laugh at the idea of electric cars.
Add a turbine on the roof of the car and a solar panel body and you'll never even have to plug the car in! The faster you drive it the more energy it produces through the turbine.
You're kidding about the fuse part right?
No.
The current limit is 1300 amps -- due to the fuses. In Ludacris thanks to the new smart fuse and new contactor, that limit can be raised safely to 1500 A -- so the car can accelerate at the same speed from 0-60 as it can from 0-30.
They made a tiny fuse that has a lithium ion battery in it. It's very accurate. They also improved the batteries with silicon on the anodes. The live update of the call was posted here, complete with questions: https://transportevolved.com/2015/07/17/liveblog-tesla-motors-super-secret-surprise-announcement/ You'll have to click load more. It covers everything. This also caught my eye:
Q: At what point will the weight of batteries be reduced to improve car? A: It's coming. In an average Model S week, we make 20 engienering changes... Interior trim, weight savings... Little improvements all over the car. For example, rear nodes went from standing casting process to high-pressure die-casting to improve durablitiy and reduce mass by about 5kg each.
Also, the waiting music for the call was Beast Mode, by Ludacris:
You're kidding about the fuse part right? [editline]17th July 2015[/editline] And people still laugh at the idea of electric cars.
Because other manufacturers make electric cars that look stupid and have a range that pale in comparison. People also have to remember that this car is so fast and it is a family sized very heavy luxury sedan.
No. They made a tiny fuse that has a lithium ion battery in it. It's very accurate. They also improved the batteries with silicon on the anodes.
Yup (go to 5:25) As for the silicon anode, is that something new? I don't think the current cells in Tesla's batteries have silicon anodes. IIRC Panasonic has been working on silicon anode for 4000mah and beyond, but I haven't heard of any progress on them in a long time.
If they made a Tesla that looked like a 90's fastback, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. So pretty much a Roadster with flip up headlights. [editline]17th July 2015[/editline] Not that I have the money for it, but I'll find a way.
P90D will come with it I believe. P90D is entirely new. All current owners can upgrade.
From what I've read it's a 5k upgrade for current P85D owners, will be a 10k upgrade for new P85D owners but I can't find anything about the P90D
From what I've read it's a 5k upgrade for current P85D owners, will be a 10k upgrade for new P85D owners but I can't find anything about the P90D
85KWh retrofit to 90 will be $5k for current owners, $3k on new cars. Ludicrous mode retrofit will be $5k to current owners, $10k on new cars. I'm not surprised they gave more love to the P85D, my 85D's 3.9 0-60 was so close to the P85D's performance that I'm sure people were having a hard time justifying the additional $30k for it. Now with a larger performance gap, the price difference will make sense again. That additional 5KWh retrofit would theoretically also come with a slight boost in performance, but as a $5k retrofit I don't think it's worth it. Coincidentally last night I received an update notification, then read that there would be an announcement today. I was really hoping Autopilot was finally being released.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-33547451 This is why electric cars are perceived poorly still. I would like to see the same thing repeated with a Tesla...
I wanna ride in one of these at least once, they're so neat
Go on their website and look for test drive events, I had signed up for one here in Jacksonville, FL. Had to cancel, but seriously, they call to figure out a time for you, customer service is wonderful, polite, and VERY helpful. You don;t have to just buy the car in order to test drive, they let anyone with a license do it.

It must be hard to buy one of these due to their R&D.
That's because there needs to be more charging stations built, although they still take 30 minutes, im sure a way will be found to lower it significantly.
Tesla are looking into increasing the output of their super chargers and have started rolling out Superchargers with liquid cooled cables, that allows them to make the cord a lot thinner and in the future increase the output. [editline]18th July 2015[/editline]
It must be hard to buy one of these due to their R&D.
Most new features that came out get updated to the older cars for free via regular Firmware updates.

Looking forward to when I can realistically afford a Tesla in 10 years. Although by then it's likely other car makers will have hopped onboard the (electric?) train and started to offer decent alternatives. A basic Model S without addons is currently ~$97000 here.

I read a biography of Musk a couple weeks ago, it's amazing how much he can accomplish considering all the shit he's been through.
my jealousy has hit ludicrous speed
If you want a test drive, all you have to do is ask. [sp]and live in close proximity to Los Angeles[/sp]
