The Shanghai City government said the situation began at 23:35 local time (15:35 GMT) and that a "working group" had been set up to handle the incident. The cause of the crush was currently under investigation, it added. Photos posted on social media showed people receiving first aid on the road and large numbers of police securing the area. A crush, as in something fell? But that's terrible, man. EDIT that looks like it's sarcastic but it really isn't, just to clarify
A crush, as in something fell? But that's terrible, man. EDIT that looks like it's sarcastic but it really isn't, just to clarify
no, as in there were way too many people there to the point of some being squeezed to death

At least the worst part of the year is out of the way I guess?
At least the worst part of the year is out of the way I guess?
Oh boy, there still is a lot to happen.
Oh boy, there still is a lot to happen.
Oh no, I meant for these people
no, as in there were way too many people there to the point of some being squeezed to death
I thought most of those deaths were always someone tripping and then being trampled to death? Seems a bit odd someone could be squeezed to death, people aren't lemons.

I was told that when they were doing the countdown, everyone was jumping and all that and some people got knocked down onto the floor and stepped on, more and more probably got knocked down and crushed by people around them.
holy shit, 35 dead from a mob crush? what the hell happened?
Theres been worse. The English had a mass-crush at a soccer stadium. They had almost 800 injuries and dearly 100 deaths.
At least the worst part of the year is out of the way I guess?
But the Asian year doesn't end for another month... Seriously China and many Asian countries go fucking nuts in January not December

It's more odd when it happens on public open space.
holy shit I didn't even know there was a word for this kind of thing

The stadium was also hugely over capacity as a large number of people had snuck in and in a shoddy condition anyways.
In a typical death like this, is the person squeezed till they cant breathe and then they suffocate to death, or do their ribs and internal organs go under so much physical pressure that they are literally crushed in?
