UK network provider O2 has followed in the footsteps of their American counterparts by scrapping unlimited data plans for the new iPhone 4. With the release of the next iPhone looming, O2 has announced its new data plans and their prices. Calling the new plans a "more transparent pricing model tied to usage", O2 claims based on current usage patterns, 97% of O2 smartphone customers would not need to buy additional data allowances, "as the lowest bundle (500MB) provides at least 2.5 times the average O2 customer’s current use." The new data plans mean customers spending between £25-£35 a month will receive 500MB, those spending £40-£45 will receive 750MB a month and if you're happy to part with a £60 a month you'll get a measly 1GB. All the tariffs will feature unlimited Wi-Fi, and all 3G data packages for new and upgrading customers will be unlimited until 1 October as part of a promotion to cushion the blow. Existing customers not wishing to upgrade will be able to keep their current contract with true unlimited data. New customers joining O2 before June 24 will also receive the existing unlimited data deal. O2 CEO Ronan Dunne said: “We know that customers are looking for clarity in pricing as too many offers have clauses and catches which are not easy to understand. With the wide range of Internet based services now available on mobile devices we’re providing customers with generous clear data bundles that give customers freedom. This enables us to provide a better overall experience for the vast majority of customers and to better manage demand.”
iPhones are for hipsters anyway, it's not like they care about the fine print of the products they buy. Oh look at me! I'm so hip and trendy because I buy a slightly better over priced Flashless product every year. In fact, it's not just iPhones, it's all of these fancy techy 'touch' phones that are plaguing the market.
I wonder if this will have an impact on iPhone sales.

I just single handedly flawed your logic without any effort whatsoever.
They just went from "so much better than German providers" to "so much worse than German providers". Good job, O2.
I have an iPhone. I'm not a hipster. I just single handedly flawed your logic without any effort whatsoever.
Darn hipster, stop flaunting with your incredibly unmoddable hardware and mediocre software! :argh:
Fucking cunts.
I wish apple would stop trying to convince people that Apple products are for the "cool, dun giff a fuck" types. Apples used to be mostly used in design industries, and for professional design agencies, and pcs were for the masses.
everyone will sign up for orange anyway horrendous idea to stop unlimited data
Oh look at me! I'm so hip and trendy because I buy a slightly better over priced Flashless product every year.
But it does have flash.
-snip oh okay sorry-
Sorry if that was supposed to be a pun.
Yes it was, you've ruined it now.

In case you didn't notice iPhones stopped being the thing you buy to be "hip and trendy" years ago, a lot of people have them. Just because you buy an iPhone, and may want to show it off doesn't mean you don't care about any other pricing.
I bought an iPhone because they're good devices.
Droids are still better, basing this off experience
I love my Droid phone, it's brilliant. :buddy: Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade to the Nexus One someday, when it's no longer Vodafone exclusive.
i have the palm pre and its does everything i need. i actually wanted an android based phone, but i'm still happy with my purchase. our family gets a good plan on our phones. 1400 minutes(split between 4 people), and unlimited data, text, picture text, sprintTV, sprint navigation for 160$/month.
I like my unlimited data, but I also love o2's network. I've got another 12 months to burn on my contract anyways before I can even think about an upgrade, so I'll have unlimited until then.
I had a Pré for about 10 days before I sent the thing back and swapped it out for a 3GS upgrade. The thing was terrible, it dropped calls like a bitch, and the app market in the UK is empty.

Also the development for it (based on java if I recall) was insanely annoying

I think a lot of people buy iPhones because they're consistently ranked near the top of smart phones. Having had one, not being able to play flash was never a problem for me, because if you browse the web you don't need to use full sites. For example www.m.mlb.com is better than www.mlb.com, and you don't need flash. You got a problem with advertising? if you buy a product solely off advertising you're an idiot anyways.

The iPhone 4 without a doubt is the top smart phone out there due to how much it offers in one device.
I'll be able to upgrade to the Nexus One someday, when it's no longer Vodafone exclusive.
Why didn't you just buy the phone only and stick in whatever sim card you wanted?
I'd love to switch to Android, there are just no phones as responsive as the iPhone. Prove me wrong with a video please.
Why didn't you just buy the phone only and stick in whatever sim card you wanted?
Because it costs over £500 to get in the UK after shipping / customs fees
this is actually for all smartphone customers on O2: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/10285910.stm they really need to get their fucking act together

And the huge display, but I think 800x480 is enough.
According to Facepunch I'm a hipster. Cool.
