I get it, you guys are mad but seriously you interpreted way too much into it. No wonder you're disappointed thinking it was the second coming of christ.
I'm kind of weirded out on the word "backfire" here. I mean, if you want to be technical about it, sure, Valve's plan backfired in that they didn't know a bunch of weirdos were going to send them fish. Those two things are so far removed that I don't think it makes sense. It's like if I was giving away something for free and one of my customers punched me in the face... do you say my plan then backfired? I mean, I get that Valve was trying to please their fans with some fun and they weren't happy with the outcome, but to say the Steam ARG itself backfired because fish was sent sounds dumb. MAYBE I'M PEDANTIC.
Was the fish at least cooked and fresh?
Valve needs to never do ARGs.
Was the fish at least cooked and fresh?
I would imagine not. To cook all that would be a little bit ridiculous even for some angry fans, I hope. It was all in crates, right? [editline]13th January 2016[/editline]
Valve needs to never do ARGs.
I'm going to place a little bit of the blame on Valve here even though everyone's wanted to be hands-off on them in this instance. Sure, the fans hyped up the whole thing - I'm not suggesting we don't point fingers at the fans - but ARG's in the past have led up to at least something, like a game update at the very least. I feel like the ARG was a little low, but not as crazy awful as people are saying it is.
Perhaps Valve realizes how incredibly toxic their fans are when valve tries to do anything mysteriously. I mean if you check the detective thing on reddit they are still trying to dig out stuff related to the ARG, thinking it just does not end there.
I'm as dissapointed as anyone else to see the ARG end in just a simple badge, but I think people are taking it way too seriously. Having people do this kind of stuff, even if it's a ''joke'' won't make them release HL 3 any sooner.

However, what was out for this winter is done - it's a story to be continued.
So what actually happened in the ARG? I never followed it after seeing the pointless shitposting it brought with it (Half Life 3 and whatnot)
So what actually happened in the ARG? I never followed it after seeing the pointless shitposting it brought with it (Half Life 3 and whatnot)
It was all for a steam badge (basically nothing), some people went batshit.
It was all for a steam badge (basically nothing), some people went batshit.
In my opinion, the badge being a literal red herring and having the description as "ARG?" did not help at all.
Wasn't the badge discovered immediately as well?
In my opinion, the badge being a literal red herring and having the description as "ARG?" did not help at all.
There was also some other clues unaccounted for. I'd like to think this is a holiday-sale-only ARG and maybe they'll continue it next christmas, since they just cut the ARG short at the beginning of January. It would be cool if that happened, like everyone has a set time limit to make progress on the ARG.
I remember the discussion in Discord about this, if I'm not mistaken they wanted to send it as gift and not negatively :v:
Wasn't the badge discovered immediately as well?
The badge was discovered before all of the clues, so people had more reason to think there was something beyond it.
The badge was discovered before all of the clues, so people had more reason to think there was something beyond it.
One clue, not all of them.
One clue, not all of them.
That's what I meant, it was discovered before every clue was discovered.
That's what I meant, it was discovered before every clue was discovered.
I'm not sure what you mean by "discovered" now then because yes, we knew there was the badge for the longest time, but it wasn't until the very end that the actual way to unlock it was discovered. Then they discovered one clue that led to bullet hell, the wav file.
I'm not sure what you mean by "discovered" now then because yes, we knew there was the badge for the longest time, but it wasn't until the very end that the actual way to unlock it was discovered.
"very end" By like the 1st week people knew how to get the badge
And then there was nothing but the wav file. And lambdas which had nothing to do with the badge. [editline]14th January 2016[/editline] I mean the whole thing went for a week and a half so
Guys. Guys! The JPEG Compression. THE PIXELS. They resemble the HL2 logo! I called it from the beginning that it was not going to be anything spectacular, it sure as hell was not. People are just THAT desperate to see valve get on with actual game development that they are losing their minds and grasping straws that fucking hard.
And then there was nothing but the wav file. And lambdas which had nothing to do with the badge. [editline]14th January 2016[/editline] I mean the whole thing went for a week and a half so
The point is that the method to obtain the badge was discovered way sooner than almost any other clue.
The point is that the method to obtain the badge was discovered way sooner than almost any other clue.
You mean the wav? [editline]14th January 2016[/editline] Because that was the only clue that was discovered post-red herring.
What is This Arg?
I'm not sure what you mean by "discovered" now then because yes, we knew there was the badge for the longest time, but it wasn't until the very end that the actual way to unlock it was discovered. when it comes to the disapointment over the hype of this arg not being something huge, it's not valves fault that there a massive number of foaming retards in the gaming community, so you really can't blame them for it "Backfiring" on them. Blame the gaming community for being literally shit. obviously not the entire gaming community, every community has it's problem people. But there's a lot of people who hype things far too much to be healthy. You can't argue that there aren't a huge number of idiots.
I get it, you guys are mad but seriously you interpreted way too much into it. No wonder you're disappointed thinking it was the second coming of christ.
It's their fault, valve args always lead to something big, depending on the context (for example tf2 args lead into big tf2 updates right?) but this one done on the store, valve's biggest thing wasn't disappointing, it just lead to no where, it's not "interpreting" when all valve args have been the same.
