BERLIN - David Hasselhoff put his name behind a campaign to preserve one of the few remaining sections of the Berlin Wall, calling it a "sacred" monument to cheers Sunday from Germans who fondly remember his schmaltzy hit "Looking for Freedom" as one of the soundtracks to their peaceful 1989 revolution.
"It's like tearing down an Indian burial ground. It's a no-brainer," said Hasselhoff, before recounting his own memories of visiting East Germany — grim cities, grim food — shortly before unification.
Plans to move part of the East Side Gallery — a 1.3 kilometre (3/4 mile) stretch of wall painted by artists after the fall of communism and popular with tourists — sparked angry protests earlier this month. Activists have denounced it as part of a wider trend of steamrolling Berlin's tumultuous history to make way for gleaming but soulless developments in the heart of the city.
"It's a stupid idea to rip parts of the wall out for luxury apartments," said Roland Junge, one of thousands of locals who accompanied Hasselhoff on an impromptu walk along the wall Sunday.
"This last piece of the wall is really sacred," Hasselhoff told reporters. "It's about people and it's about hearts that were broken, hearts that were torn apart and lives that were lost. That's what we're talking about today, not a piece of real estate."

That Title. Yea they need to preserve the Berlin wall.
I went to see the East Side Gallery just last month, It should stay where it is.
I think they should leave it up as a reminder, you can regret the past but you shouldn't forget it happened.
They should preserve it for the same reasons they preserved places like Auschwitz and Sachsenhausen.
It's a piece of history, why doesn't it have UN World Heritage Site status? It'd protect it and sure as hell deserves it.

I like to imagine he was drunk off his ass and eating a cheeseburger in front of the wall.
His choice of words are...iffy, but I agree that this kind of thing should be preserved for history. It may symbolize a time of division, but its still part of history.
I think my mother still has a little piece of the wall (probably not real) in a plastic baggie somewhere, along with a picture or two.
My city's museum has a piece of the wall for whatever reason (I live way out in Michigan), and in small letters it says "platypus."

So the signs in Berlin weren't lying? I'm impressed.

I've got a very tiny piece of the wall, somewhere around here.
I got a piece of the wall in a world in conflict special edition box.

Everyone has a piece of that wall. You'd be surprised.
(I don't mean crumbles or shit but wall segments donated to museums all around)
Oh man, how many countries would like to have those kinds of problems
"Guys, luxury apartments or structures of historical significance? Hmm?"

I was supposed to get one, but fucking gamestop didn't have them
I would never had known about this if wasn't for David Hasselhoff. Is that a good or a bad thing?
It's really fascinating what they've done on the road where the wall used to be. They have lines painted to show where the divide was, which is made even more crazy to think about when you see all the life that goes on around and through the lines.

I'm in the same boat as you.
I was in Berlin recently, and the restoration of some areas since reunification is absolutely astounding. I couldn't tell what side of the wall I was on most of the time.
They can't keep it standing forever
Eventually it will get destroyed in one way or another
