Actual post from The Pirate Bay: Hey guys! It's Karol from 11 bit studios, the developers of This War of Mine. We are really happy to hear that you like our game. They prove, that spending 2 years on it was worth it. I would like to say thank you to everyone, who decides to buy the game and support us - because of that we'll be able to develop TWoM further and create even better games in the future. If because of some reasons you can't buy the game, it's ok. We know life, and we know, that sometimes it's just not possible. Here are some codes for the steam copy of the game, so some of you can take a look at it. And if you like the game after spending few hours in, then just spread the word, and you'll help us a lot.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/2mk0wj/this_war_of_mine_developer_reaches_out_to_tpb/ Not posting the link to TPB because warez n stuff.
Reminds me of the hotline miami dev who updated pirated copies and gave them numerous bugfixes.
Hell, I don't pirate games, nor have I ever heard of this game before, but hearing this strangely makes me want to support this dev and buy the game.
I watched the game streamed last night, I'd suggest checking it out on steam. It's $20.00 right now, but I'll definitely buy it when it goes on sale.
it's an okay game and the combat is fun, but there aren't enough skills or things to do in the day
Fucking reddit. Why would you remove a message made by the developers of a game?
Fucking reddit. Why would you remove a message made by the developers of a game?
Likely the same reason it'd be removed if it was posted on Facepunch: linking to Pirate Bay.
this dev is great, i know several people who download the game then pay for it about a month later anyway.
That's incredibly cool of them. This game's on my wishlist and I was waiting for it to go on sale, but I think I may buy it now.
If they got the consent of everyone who worked on an financed the game, then they can do whatever they want with it.

If you're planning to buy the game do so via the Humble store instead, as you get a few more extras and I think the developers get more money from the purchase https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/thiswarofmine_storefront
If they got the consent of everyone who worked on an financed the game, then they can do whatever they want with it.
Well, no, if whoever owns the rights to the game wants to, they can do whatever they want with it. They don't need the permission of every last team member- not that they'd care, since they're just drawing a steady paycheck while they work on it anyways, it's the publisher that should care, and if Deep Silver is unaware of the devs doing this then there could be repercussions. That said, giving out a few free keys is not a big deal.
Lots of respect for developers like these, I love seeing this kind of stuff when a lot of devs spend so much time developing their games and making sure people spend every penny for their game. It takes a good man to work on a game for so long and then willingly throw it on pirate bay.

I was trying to say that as long as this isn't just some rogue dev who's advocating piracy, then it's all good. The article makes it seem like, at very least, the whole of the dev team is on board, so that's good.
It takes a good man to work on a game for so long and then willingly throw it on pirate bay.
1. They didn't put it on TPB. They commented on it, someone else had already uploaded it. 2. They don't seem too concerned with profit, since the game itself is a fundraising project with War Child. Making money is not the goal, raising awareness for charities for people displaced by conflict is. 3. For a minor studio, the publicity something like this provides is a much more substantial boost than the ten potential sales they've lost by giving out some free keys. It's just good PR.
This game actually seems really good and doing this just solidifies my view of the devs.
Apparently the profits are partly going to charity, and the game is more about exploring the dangers of being a civilian in a war-zone, so I would assume that the game's purpose is to develop sympathy for non-combatants. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_War_of_Mine
Good PR stunt. The game is good too.
This is really cool.
Impressive that they are #2 on the steam top sellers with no advertisement.
