Hi guys, I'm just wondering what the current sockets/chipsets are for AMD processors? I know that with Intel you've got your i3/5/7 with H/P55 chipsets, and googling didn't really help. Help! :(
As far as sockets go, there is AM2, AM2+ and AM3. It's actually quite surprising how flexible sockets and CPU's are. For example you can actually place an AM2+ in an AM2 socket with a simple BIOS upgrade. I've also heard that the same compatability also exists between AM2(+) and AM3, however don't quote me on that.
And what are the differences between chipsets? (I'm trying to shave off the price of an AMD build, and I'm not sure which motherboard chipset to go with, as some are considerably cheaper than others).
A AM3 CPU will work in an AM2 socket with a BIOS flash, and should work in AM2+ out of the box.
Okay, cheers. Do they both support DDR3? Are there any major differences actually?
Am3 is the only one supporting DDR3 memory.
Chipset isn't as important as other features such as expansion slots. Just give us an ideal budget for the board and we'll find the best one
Here's what I'm thinking so far:

Trying to shave it down to ~500, and I think I can do that with the motherboard.
Could I use this mobo for example, and keep the same RAM/CPU?

Are you going to SLi? Your current motherboard only supports crossfire Also get this case http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coolermaster-elite-334-black-midi-tower-case-w-o-psu
I doubt it, this will be my setup for a couple of years at least.
I really recommend that you get this SLi board as it will give you an easy upgrade (even if you do it in a couple of years) http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-m4n75td-nf-750a-sli-am3-pci-e-20-(x16)-ddr3-1066-1333-2200(oc)-sata-3gb-s-raid-atx
Otherwise just get this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigabyte-ga-ma770t-ud3-amd-770-am3-pci-e-20-(x16)-ddr3-1666-1333-sata-3gb-s-raid-atx
Oh and please get the case I linked above
Why the disagree Darkimmortal?
And Finley: I honestly doubt I'll be SLIing, by the time I need to upgrade, it'll be time for uni. so I'll be getting a laptop haha.

Is an Athlon II X4 worth getting? I've heard the L3 cache doesn't matter that much in gaming.
Or even a Pentium G6950? (an i3 in disguise)
Why the disagree Darkimmortal?
SLIPatch works perfectly on AMD chipsets, and I am strongly of the opinion that SLI is shit.
Also I recommend that Gigabyte board FINLEY posted - my dad has one and it's really good for the price.
SLi is shit? Where'd you get that from? Also even if SLiPatch works perfectly (which it doesn't) why wouldn't you just buy an SLi board in the first place?
psst. guys. What's SLIpatch?

nvm googled it.

Will DDR3 1600 work with that board?

Terrible microstutter and input lag when I tried it, and it was no better on SLIPatch+890GX than on an nForce 650i board.
psst. guys. What's SLIpatch?
A modified Windows kernel+HAL that gets around the chipset limitation on SLI
I never experienced said microstutter nor input lag on 8800GT SLI and GTX 280 SLI (mobo is 650i)
anyways the new generation of cards handle multi-GPU far better than older cards and if you have a capable motherboard there's really no reason not go to SLI for a cheap performance upgrade

One bad experience doesn't mean it's not good. Don't post shit that you can't back up. You're just complicating the issue
Would it be worth waiting for Sandy bridge?
A AM3 CPU will work in an AM2 socket with a BIOS flash, and should work in AM2+ out of the box.
I had to flash my old Foxconn AM2+ to get the AM3 support, but it wasn't hard. Took five minutes.

Woops, I may have caught some flase information then.

You're mostly right. Its only with the older models that have that.
I can't think of any AM2+ motherboard right now that isn't AM3 ready on newegg.

Fair enough.
If you're getting AMD you should get an ATI card and then later you could get another and run CrossFire.
I'm thinking I'll just wait for Sandy Bridge or Bulldozer, whichever is better/cheaper. Thanks guys :)

This has nothing to do with the CPU being AMD branded.

You should also know that Intel has the X58.
Id wait for Bulldozer if your going with AMD
I'd wait for both the next generation CPUs since brand means nothing if the processor is good :colbert:
