I'm building a new PC (technically 2 one for me and my dad both exactly the same) We're getting the money for it soon, either tomorrow or sometime next week. I need opinions
Dad already sent it off the config to a site (http://www.extreme-pc.ca) for opinions but I don't trust them, they're probably in it for the money. That is why I'm asking here for a second opinion.
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K Quad (8 Threads) 3.4-3.8GHz - Socket 1155, 8MB Cache Boxed Processor
Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV Extreme (Rev 3, B3 Revision!) Intel Core i7/i5/i3 | 4 PCI-E | S1155/Intel P67 Chipset | 3-way SLI | ATI CrossFireX | DDR3 1066-2133Mhz | GB LAN | HD Audio | RAID | Extreme OC!
Ram: 2x4GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR3 (1600MHz) 8GB Dual Channel Kit
Case: ThermalTake BMW Inspired Level 10 GT Extreme Gaming Station Chassis w/o PSU - Black (this case was my dad's choice, anything 'cool' looking but cheaper?)
Power Supply: Corsair HX Series 1000W Silent Modular Power Supply Corsair HX Series 1000W Silent Modular Power Supply
CPU Cooler: ZALMAN Copper CNPS9900 MAX LED Quiet (1156/1366/775/AM2+/AM3/754/939/940) CPU Cooler | QMax: 300W | Red
Round IDE HD Cable: Coolmax 18" SATA Cable 2-Head Model SATA 18" 2H - BLUE
Hard Drive: Western Digital VelociRaptor | 600GB (10,000RPM) | 32MB Cache (I'm open to smaller sizes I don't think we need anything over 300)
Disc Drive: LG CH12LS28 Blu-Ray Combo Reader | 10x BluRay Read | 16x DVD±RW/RAM Read/Write | SATA | Black
GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX 590
The site my dad sent it too said it was a "great gaming machine" all they changed was the motherboard because it was the wrong socket type (whoops)
This machine should last me a few years, maybe the only changes I should make is graphic cards, (we should have enough money left over for a card upgrade if needed)
That looks extremely excessive
GTX 590 is terrible, get a single card. Drop the 10k rpm drive and get a SSD. Get rid of the Level 10 GT, get a HAF X/650D/800D, or whatever you like. Get a Z68 motherboard for intel smart response.
are you guys going to use 8GB ram and the threads the 2600k has? if not get 4gb and a 2500k

What do you recommend for a video card then?
Plus with the CPU I want to handle what ever is coming out in the next year or 2. Is an i5 really enough?
GTX 570 or 6970. Then add another later if needed

I'll expand on that by saying, you are only ever going to see the benefit of a 2600k and 8GB of RAM if you are into heavy video encoding, rendering, etc. But for general purpose and gaming a 2500k and 4GB will suffice.
Hard Drive wise, honestly the savings aren't worth it going for a "small" capacity, its a scale of $20 MAX between 500GB and 1TB+, just go for the solid 1TB Spinpoint F3 and you won't regret it. If you are looking for blistering pace, buy a moderately sized SSD to install your Operating System on, plus your main programs. A lot of people recommend the OCZ Vertex 3 if you can afford it, there are also the Intel series 510 or 320 just choose what you can afford for the performance, and you are looking at around 100-120GB to get OS plus key programs on there.
Previous poster already mentioned the graphics card, going with the 590 is just pissing away watts, seriously just drop to the GTX580 or 570 and you will be able to run anything.
Motherboard, well the Rampage is expensive, but I don't think it really offers anything special you're likely to use (might be wrong), there are much cheaper ASUS boards or you could go with MSI, both highly recommended.

the 2500k and 2600k are the exact same thing except the 2600k has hyperthreading
for most applications you won't notice a difference, especially gaming
Ok, thanks here is what I changed
Intel Core i5 2500 Quad (4 Thread) 3.3 - 3.7GHz - Socket 1155, 6MB Cache Boxed Processor (Sandy Bridge - 32nm) Limited Overclock
Asus P8B-WS Intel Core i7/i5/i3 | X16 PCI-E S1155/Intel C206 Chipset | ATI CrossFireX | DDR3 1066-2133Mhz | GB LAN | HD Audio | RAID | Workstation
1x4GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR3 (1600MHz) 4GB - KHX1600C9D3/4G
Cooler Master HAF X - Silent Air Flow Gaming Super Tower - All Black
Gigabyte Radeon HD6970
You want the i5 2500k so you can overclock
You want 2x2GB ram to use dual channel
and im not sure about the mobo

Oh I see, small mistake
Also I forgot to post what HD I changed to

Any suggestions on a Soundcard? Or is the Creative X-Fi in my current computer good enough?
you won't need a soundcard unless you have headphones that can benefit from it
Ok, so I'll just move my current one over.

Just a quick question, do you have a hard drive that you're going to add to the build, because there is no way you can run a modern computer with JUST a 120GB SSD. The SSD is great for your OS, yes, and some key programs, but if you install steam on there or put some pictures and music on that drive you'll run out of performance and space in no time.
I already have a harddrive yes, the SSD is just for OS and what not,
Great thing about steam is that it is practically portable, I have it on a seperate HD so I won't have to worry about re-installing all my steam games, only certain games that require registry entries.
So anything else I should change in this config before I start buying? Or am I good?

Looks okay to me, enjoy your new computer.
Why have you dropped this poor soul to 4GB of ram? The PSU also seems a little large, but I guess too much power is never a bad thing in that regard.
Maybe it's because I use a lot of photoshop but I had severe problems when I only had 4GB of ram, was only DDR2 though. I may not be eligible to make judgements.
well sephrosasia said earlier in the thread that 8 gigs is only useful if I'm video rendering or stuff like that. Which I do not do very often.
Putting it back up to 8 is not a problem, I'm already spending under budget, but that is good, it means i can save that money for games or future upgrades.

It's because you did alot of Photoshop. On my rig I've only gotten to the 4GB by torturing it.

I would personally spend it on future upgrades.
