A former Army lieutenant who was discharged from service last week for being openly gay said Sunday that he will continue to fight for a quick repeal of the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
"I know that there are a lot of people who are suffering, and my oath, my commitment to them, doesn't end," former Lt. Dan Choi told CNN's Don Lemon.
Choi was arrested in March for handcuffing himself to a White House fence in protest of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which bars people who are openly gay or lesbian from serving in the military.
He admitted his sexual orientation publicly for the first time last year on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show," prompting the Army to initiate proceedings to discharge him.
Choi said that while his honorable discharge hurts, he knows there is a "greater purpose for every single one of us, even if we're stripped of all our wealth or our resources."
"One thing about honor, one thing about dignity -- it's not dependent on what's written on a document," he said. "That comes from standing up and being truthful to who you are."
He also vowed to "continue to speak up for those people who cannot."
"I'm going to continue to pressure those who purport to be our friends -- whether they're congressmen, senators or the president himself. If they make a promise, I will hold them to it."
President Barack Obama is pushing for a repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. A bill that would overturn the measure after a Pentagon review is completed in December is currently before Congress.
More than 12,500 gays have been booted from the military since "don't ask, don't tell" went into effect.
Choi, a 2003 West Point graduate who is fluent in Arabic, was an infantry platoon leader, serving with his unit in Iraq in 2006 and 2007.
Uh, why? They're already working on it aren't they :S
he will continue to fight for a quick repeal of the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

I thought they already repealed it?
good for him. it's wrong for them to accept him into the military and then to assume that he's straight. just because someone's gay or lesbian doesn't mean they cannot perform as well as a straight person, and this is no different.

That's really not the reason the rule is still in place.
That's really not the reason the rule is still in place.
there's no legitimate reason for it to be in place
it's simply homophobia

The "don't ask don't tell" is there so people don't question other people's sexuality
That's really not the reason the rule is still in place.
i know it isn't, it's just straight homophobia also, i probably worded my post a bit odd. i realize that that isn't the reason gays and lesbians are not allowed in the military, i just kind of fucked up my post a bit
there's no legitimate reason for it to be in place

Pretty much.
Well, homophobia and a fear of stepping on the wrong people's toes.
The "don't ask don't tell" is there so people don't question other people's sexuality
You shouldn't have to question it though.
They claim it's in place because they believe that troops would be disturbed if they were in the presence of a gay person.
That doesn't change anything, even if it does upset the troops they need to learn to live with homosexuals otherwise they'll never get accepted, it's just an excuse so they can keep homophobia in the military.
:sigh:
discharged from service last week for being openly gay
What the fucking shit is this? Oh my God, fucking intolerance. Disgusts me.
Shit like this gets me so damn angry. That is nothing but pure homophobia. Whoever discharged him should be the one being fucking discharged.
So, I guess Dan isn't boobies?
On a more serious note, I'm with him on this. There needs to be equality in the military for gays, as well as everyone else.
This shit is not right.
Fuck our government.
gaybow works because he is gay, and it is pretty optimistic if he thinks he can change anything
that's a gay policy
Good man.
This isn't exactly a homophobic policy, it doesn't kick people out for being gay (if it does, then disregard everything), it kicks them out for flaunting it, which is annoying and holds no purpose in a military environment

yes, it is homophobic
they'll discharge you if you even admit you're gay
yes, it is homophobic

Why would anyone need to admit that? What does that have to do with anything?
Why would anyone need to admit that? What does that have to do with anything?
What gives the soldiers in the military the right to say they're straight?
Sure they shouldn't flaunt it around and they should get in trouble for being disorderly if they're willingly trying to disturb people, but if you just let slip you're gay then they should have no right to kick you out.
We should kick out all the white people in the military, stupid assholes flaunting their skin color and all. :colbert:

You won't get kicked out of the military for flaunting being straight.
Get out
Why would anyone need to admit that? What does that have to do with anything?
how about this: they'll kick you out if by from no action on your own part they discover that you are gay
Me personally if a gay wants to stay in the military,
keep it to your DAMN self!
That's all you got to do.
Me personally if a gay wants to stay in the military,

Why should they have to keep it to themselves?
how about this: they'll kick you out if by from no action on your own part they discover that you are gay
That'd be pretty stupid.
Honestly I think the people who go "eeeew penis in butthole that's gay i cannot let that happen b& gay pls" are retarded. Buttsex is not gay-people-exclusive, y'know.
A great way to get out of the army with no penalty is by stating that you are gay.
You won't get kicked out of the military for flaunting being straight.
Get out
Sorry, that doesn't work because being straight is normal.
Swear to god if I get dumbs for this I'll kill myself, if you're so blinded by politcal correctness that you can't even admit that being gay is, indeed, abnormal then don't even post.

Yeah that's bad, very bad.

So you're saying being gay is wrong? Being albino is abnormal but they're still allowed to serve.

That makes no sense. "Political Correctness" is completely ignoring gay people and any rights they may or may not have, which is the exact opposite of how it should be. Women and black people got the same treatment as gay people are getting now, then they got rights, so why shouldn't gay people as well?
